Holy macramonie....
This is one stunning macro Russ. I too hate flies... especially when the don't stop buzzing around when you are having a BBQ. Ggggrrrr....
But that doesn´t make this photo any less amazing. I really like the way you can see all the details of this buster.
That's one of your best yet Russ!
The colors and the clarity are magnificant! I can't imagine how you got that close to that guy. They are usually flighty as heck!
Nice job man!!
Thanks everyone. I can't stand the things, but they are interesting from a design standpoint. This was shot at night, lit with my D80's built-in flash. I find them with a flashlight and then approach slowly. They seem less prone to fly away at night - it's probably an instinct to avoid flying into a spider's web in the dark. And BossCamper, the apparent dent is just refraction from the compound eye.
If anyone's interested, this was shot as a RAW file and sharpened in Photoshop CS using Smart Sharpen on the Lightness Channel after converting it to Lab Color. After resizing & converting it back to the RGB color space, I saved and uploaded it as a PNG file.
Personally, I loathe these kind of shots but I couldn't pass up the chance to tell you just how spectacular this macro shot really is. I've never seen such amazing detail & color in my life, I'd swear I'm there ! I just popped over from the VB in disbelief but I had to tell you.
Bravo.
"The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web." Pablo Picasso
That is a really impressive shot, I love the refraction in it's eye. I especially like how you've managed to turn something 'disgusting' into something - well, not!
