A half inch jumping spider, Phidippus audax, common throughout North America. An interesting thing about these types of spiders is that their retinas move, but the outside of the eyes don't.
And he did it again!!!
Took me a while to come back to my pc and take a closer look at this spider. Luckily I did for else I would not have noticed that it looks rather cute with those hairs above those little eyes. Can't explain it but he makes me laugh.

Aww I love these little guys! I have several that live around here but never got a good shot of one. This is FANTASTIC with all the detail you captured! Nice DOF too :)

I much appreciate all the comments I receive about my images, but please excuse me if I don't always reply. My interest in Caedes is exceeding my time available!
Aw - lovely. I once had one like this trying to jump on the coffee pot - I kept moving it away because it was hot, and he followed it all round the table - eventually he gave up and jumped on the sugar bowl instead.
I photographed one of these guys once. I think this is a Bold Jumping Spider. They are kind of aggressive. Sharp capture. What type lens are you using? Nice job.

Anything that excites me for any reason, I will photograph; not searching for unusual subject matter, but making the commonplace unusual.

Russ, they are called Bold Jumping Spiders and they are very aggressive. I've read that they'll rarely bother with anything that isn't at least half their size and often it'll be much bigger than themselves. I watched one slightly smaller than this look at and then ignore a juvenile ladybug, probably because it just wasn't worth the effort. They're fascinating creatures and very difficult to photograph in the wild.
My gear is a Nikon D80 and the lens is a Tokina 100mm Macro.
Unfortunately, I badly underexposed this shot, but was able to get a decent version from the RAW file - at the cost of some extra noise. Live and learn.
Oh, my... so pretty and sharp. Was he begging for a fly? I've never seen a spider look so intently upon the camera... I don't know what powers you have, but you can apparently keep a spider's attention.
