A small garden spider shot at 1.5X with the Canon MP-E65 macro lens and a ring flash. Found on the underside of a leaf, about six feet in the air. The body is only half an inch long, but shooting underneath it is still a little unnerving when it looks to be the size of a car in the viewfinder.

Spiders are one of my few phobias, Russ, having been bitten by too many of them, and the clarity on this image of yours is so good it looks alive on my iPhone screen. And this from a half-inch long spider? This is as close to it that I care to get. Last week I photographed one of the largest spiders I've ever seen, while on vacation in the Black Hills, and I got it from about 10 feet away with a 250mm. From this view and your post I'm thinking you had to bend directly over it, closely, in order to get such a good capture. Just how close?

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I tried several different angles, but getting this shot required being almost directly beneath the spider. The front lens was only about 2-3 inches from it at this magnification, and a light breeze also made holding focus difficult. This lens is manual focus only, by the way. As the spider moved in and out of focus it seemed like it was about to drop onto my face, but it's just something you learn to ignore.

Serious photographers take risks to get certain kinds of photos. I've stood in the middle of a river, with only my head, hands, and camera out of the water. I've hung off scaffolding 50 feet off the ground to shoot down into a pillar of fresh concrete. I've close-photographed a wild bull elk who was charging me away from his lady friend. But if you were that close, not to mention underneath a spider, well... you're a braver man than I. It's an outstanding photograph, Russ.

A fabulous photo.
Not only do some like to cuddle - some like to bite and anyone who has been bitten is bound to be a bit scared - That includes me !

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Thank you all for the very nice comments. The spider was tiny, but once all it's details could be seen, it was a really formidable looking creature. And definately not something you want to be seeing up close if you're a bug.
