All of the orb weavers this year are small, like this tiny beast. Shot at 2X with a Laowa 100mm macro lens and a ring flash, the body is about the size of a match head. It isn't until the strobe lights it up that the colors and intricate patterns become visible.

Wowowow, your tight DOF on his upper parts really show off his markings and his hairs. If his body is that small, I can only imagine the thinness of those hairs. A couple years ago my wife and I were kayaking on Deerfield Lake, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, when I spotted a spiderweb the size of a card table, clinging about 8 feet up a sheer cliff. I spotted the spider waiting patiently in it and later, when I brought it up back home on my big screen, identified it as an orb weaver, except this one had been eating very well for some time, including his legs he was about the size of a deck of cards. I was very glad he refrained from doing a Tarzan swing down to my boat. I like spiders only in photos, like this marvel of yours.

Happy Trails

Thank you both, I really appreciate that. I tried getting a better angle, but it wasn't to be. I know everybody wants to see those eight baby blues up close.
