I used the Photoshop shape tool to create a thick arrow, in white. I then used the "twist" filter to curl it into the spiral at the center. I added a drop shadow, diffused outer glow, filled a layer on top & bottom with a pattern and then adjusted the blend modes to get the output you see here. I also bubbled out the center using a distortion filter.

An unusual and beautiful image: great 3D effect and colours which manage to be bright, light and rather subtle all at the same time. I appreciate the way you explain your techniques, too, though you make it sound rather deceptively simple! Experts tend to do that... but, then, it _seems_ simple to them.

It makes me think of moulds for hollow chocolate eggs for some reason - take two of these and you could make the two halves of an egg. At least, I couldn't, but somebody who knew how...
