Still in the late 1950's, I shot this on a self imposed assignment of downtown Detroit's back alleys. It was still relatively safe in those days, particularly in daylight. I was some distance away when I shot this, and using a long telephoto lens. That's why the pick-up truck bed is so compressed. It was obvious he was looking after the truck contents and never moved from that position.I just meandered on to another alley. He reminds me of someone out of "Gangs of New York" or some Mafia movie, though this was taken decades before those movies were produced.

He was a "snappy dresser," for sure Doug.
I like how the attention is on him but the pickup tells more of the story.
You are a special breed and I am glad you are sharing your memories with us.

Such sharp focus on the "van-guard"! A top notch B/W image Doug. Those boxes contain some items meant for "special delivery". He is not carrying because all three buttons are closed on his jacket. The bulge you see is only his abdomen :)

He definitely looks to be the "lookout" - wonderful capture of a person and moment in a particular time and place - what photojournalism is all about.

Just his composure / posture & glaring eyes looks like he means business if anyone approaches him or the truck. You captured the moment perfectly, Doug. You have some wonderful images from the 50's ... I bet you could write a book about them.

He's not going to stand for any monkey business from the looks of him. Glad you got this great shot and got out of there.

Excellent shot , Doug .
He does have a gangster look about him .
I like the tones and the truck in the background.
Perhaps the "Getaway Truck ".

Man...he is the spitting image of Frankie at work. He even has the same look on his face. Great capture Doug. I really like the expression on his face that you captured. You sure know how to capture your people shots.

I love this picture. I live near detroit, and even though I haven't been alive as long as you I do notice a difference in Detroit compared to how it used to be. It is much more dangerous now.
