I was lucky to get this photo as it took two minutes to get my camera. When I returned it was still there. It remained motionless for over 5 minutes, then left the area. Thanks for the identification Greg. The Red-spotted Purple is a mimic of the poisonous Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor), and hence gains protection from predacious birds. It is thought the red-spotted purple hybridizes with the white admiral butterfly to produce partially banded offspring. Many lepidopterists consider the two to be one species

There now, see what clean living will do for you? Isn't it amazing -- and a complete mystery -- that these guys will occasionally sit still like this, instead of just driving us crazy? Ted, this is right up there with Ewa's "Peacock Butterfly" photo from yesterday. I'm heading off to the bug sites now, to see if I can figure out this guy's name . . .

It took you a whole two minutes?! You mean you don't carry your camera around with you? LOL
What a gorgeous shot Ted! Simply a very elegant butterfly and one with lots of manners to wait for you like that! Beautiful!

Never rebuke while you’re still indignant about a fault committed—wait until the next day, or even longer. Then calmly, and with a purer intention, make your reprimand. You’ll gain more by a friendly word than by a three-hour quarrel. -Josemaria Escriva

Ted, I looked far and wide, and I didn't see a single one that resembled yours. I guess you can name the new species after yourself . . . . or maybe a lepidopterist will come along and enlighten us.

Now I know the inspiration that sparked women to dress their eyes with glittery shadows in delightful colors. This butterfly wears it so well! What a delightful shot!

"Beautiful" does not seem to be sufficient for this photo, Ted! It is a perfect study of a very nice Butterfly, and I am grateful to you for posting it!

Ted, here's the answer: this is one variation of Limenitis arthemis astyanax -- the "Red-Spotted Purple" butterfly. See here. (I got this tip from the curator of a great website -- for an elementary school, believe it or not. You can check it out here.)

You had to send garbage cans flying everywhere as you ran through your yard to get your camera. Probably plowed up small trees, flowers and ferns. I can just picture it. This is gorgeous and a marvelous capture. I can feel the velvety wings. It's a keeper.

Sometimes you must have some luck ! it was great that it sat there still indeed.
I am wondering what the brown spots are, just near the leading edge of both wings..
Nothing in nature happens without a reason...
Lately, i see a lot of butterfly images posted here at caedes, what i do not understand is how you all can come so close in range, without the beast flee the situation...
Whatever, it is sertanly a great image.

It is so beautiful and the colors are amazing. I am glad it waited for you to take the photo.I love the plain background so that the image can stand out clearly and the eye has nothing else to focus on. Very well done and it goes into my favorites!!

The name ChuPat is derived from my nickname Chuck and my wife of 34 years name Patti. Her photography will appear on Caedes as well from time to time. I consider myself an advanced amature not anyway close to being a professional. I have just taken photography more seriously since I have switched to digital. My profession has always been associated with pohtography in one way or another. Any criticism I receive will be well appreciated.
