A polar bear's body temperature runs around 98.6 degree F., typical for most mammals, but their adaptation to cold weather means they have an unfortunate propensity to overheat. They are incredibly well insulated with a layer of blubber that can be up to 10cm thick covered with another 15cm of fur. Polar bears lose so little heat to their environment that they are almost invisible to thermal imaging cameras. If your zoo doesn't keep his environment cool, Ted, bears are able to dissipate heat through their paws, which are well-supplied with blood vessels. They also lose heat through other areas with minimal fur, such as faces, ears, nose, belly and the insides of their legs. Polar bear technical specifications aside, Ted, turning a polar bear into a paw-over-the-nose cuddlie is something that only an experienced photographer can manage. Nice.
