This is the smokestack of the coal fired electricity generating plant at Pleasant Prairie Wisconsin. The Pleasant Prairie power plant burns 13,000 tons of coal per day and provides 13.5% of Wisconsin's electricity. When coal is used as a fuel source, the gaseous emissions generated by the thermal decomposition of the coal include sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2), mercury, and other chemical byproducts that vary depending on the type of the coal being used. These emissions have been established to have a negative impact on the environment, contributing to acid rain and other pollutants. According to United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the burning of coal, a fossil fuel, is a major contributor to global warming. I will fully admit that I love all my modern conveniences but every time I see this smokestack I question what we are doing to one of our most valuable elements - the air we breathe. This was taken about 9:30am with clear skies by late afternoon there is always a high thin layer of clouds in this area because of what has been put into the atmosphere. I don't know the answer because we all know the dangers in nuclear power too. My entry for the elements contest.

Good capture for the current contest Kathy, but to me your narrative is even more interesting. On the one hand one can't deny the by you mentioned facts, but on the other hand solutions aren't simple. In a lot of countries (and my country too) there's done and they still do a lot of effort for generating electrical power in a alternative way like wind turbines, solar panels, tidal turbines, and so on. But the targets are not met in 2018.
Makes me worried from time to time. Hope that our politicians are have this worries as well, but I've my doubts about that.

Anyhow Good Luck with your entrymy friend!

I agree with SEA, Kathy. First of all the shot shows the plight of which you mention.
I don't worry so much for myself, but I worry about the future generations. Good awareness photo.

I like your perspective in that the power generated from the coal transfers through the power lines in your image. Your narrative is most informative and the answers for alternate energy sources remain unanswered. Good luck in the contest, Kathy.

We are destroying the benefits mother earth has given us not so slowly but steadily with no thoughts about the future and the generations to come! Nice capture against that blue sky Kathy. When you read how many species of life have ceased to exist since the last 100 years it is shocking.

I like your shot here, and Mr. C's comment. I am not so sure about politicians caring that much about the environment...they mainly care about promoting themselves in the guise of caring about the environment! But anyway, you have a good entry for the contest. Good luck with it.

It is a great shot Kathy and maybe in a few years, You can look at it and see it as something from a bygone era - just a page in our countries history. You will be able to photograph it as an abandoned structure with no smoke belching from it.

A good perspective in the photo and good capture of the stack, Kathy. Maybe if subsidies were removed from the "dirty" energy sources then a switch to more environmentally friendly sources would happen sooner rather than later. Or maybe if people got over the whole wind/solar farms "ruin the view" viewpoint. A complex issue with no simple solution. Best of luck in the contest.

If there was only a choice between fossil fuel or atomic fuelled power stations I'd gladly suffer the minor irritations from a coal plant.
Interesting competition entry Kathy.
