Japanese spirea is one of many varieties in the spirea family. This one originated in Japan and was brought to the USA around 1870. It has since became naturalized in many parts of the Northeast and Midwest. It is seen along creek banks, wetlands and by the roadsides.

It is beautiful and can take over if not trimmed back. The Multi Flower Rose was another import that took over when allowed to multiply. Some times we have to pay the price for beauty.

Kathy, this reddish variant doesn't (yet) grow in my area, but a white or cream colored variant. The Japonica species may be considered a plague, but the appearance is colorful anyway. Anyhow for foreigners, 😜 !
