He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom i trust". Psalm 91: 1 and 2

antithesis , a figure of speech involving a seeming contradiction of ideas, words, clauses, or sentences within a balanced grammatical structure. Parallelism of expression serves to emphasize opposition of ideas. The familiar phrase "Man proposes, God disposes" is an example of antithesis, as is John Dryden's description in "The Hind and the Panther" : "Too black for heaven, and yet too white for hell."

In my search for the meaning of this term I had never heard of before today, I have found that it is a technique commonly used... in advertising. I think that this would be an interesting exercise that would help us to recognize and/or counterbalance the power of persuasion along with perhaps developing some skill in photography. For those of us who did not know what it was... it must definitely rank in the 'something new' category. And probably the thing I like about this Topic the most... it would (hopefully!) make us think! In yet another link I found a ppt showing a 'montage' could be a valid representation of Visual Antithesis.
Try googling antithesis Rene Magritte
or nilsenvocabulary visual antithesis to get but two hits!
I had also looked-up Vertical Photography but immediately (and this could be an error on my part!) became disinterested when I found it to be map photography or aerial photography.
:o)
Not really trying to influence the vote... this is truly intended more as a shortcut to information... as an answer to Horntail's question... even though I succumbed and expressed my opinion! :O)
How about a 'color' ... I'm specifically thinking of ORANGE where that color can be either dominant or is the main focus of the composition. In other words, orange has to be eyecatching with creativity put into the image. I'm sure for most that sunrise / sunset will come to mind, but there are many natural occurances that display the color orange as well as man-made objects.
A color such as orange would be open to all genres as well ... Abstract / Fractal, CGI, & of course, Photography.
Orange is an interesting idea, Sherree, as would be any single-colored theme. If I might shamelessly plug my "composition", I was thinking it might double as a teaching tool, much the same way the "Negative Space" did.

Wouldn't verbal antithesis be very similar to the oxymoron contest we had awhile back? And just to keep the older contest list up to date, we also had a negative space contest after the curves contest. As for macro being similar to nano...that's true but that one goes back a long time and we have alot of new members since then who might like to participate in something like that. I do like the dominent color theme...an idea we had for our challenges...and orange would be a good color for this time of year.
Pat,
Here is what I found thru' google:
=================================
oxymoron A figure of speech that combines two usually contradictory terms in a compressed paradox, as in the word bittersweet or the phrase living death. Oxymoronic phrases, like Milton's ‘darkness visible’, were especially cultivated in 16th‐ and 17th‐century poetry. Shakespeare has his Romeo utter several in one speech:
Why then, O brawling love, O loving hate,
O anything of nothing first create;
O heavy lightness, serious vanity,
Misshapen chaos of well seeming forms,
Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health,
Still waking sleep, that is not what it is!
==================================
Antithesis:
1. Direct contrast; opposition.
2. The direct or exact opposite: Hope is the antithesis of despair.
3. a. A figure of speech in which sharply contrasting ideas are juxtaposed in a balanced or parallel phrase or grammatical structure, as in “Hee for God only, shee for God in him” (John Milton).
b. The second and contrasting part of such a juxtaposition.
4. The second stage of the Hegelian dialectic process, representing the opposite of the thesis.

While they are defined differently, I can see how they would be treated similarily!
I have changed my vote... 'caedes allows this flexibility. And the process seems to work flawlessly... my previous vote was subtracted from Visual Antithesis and added to 'my current Topic'! o:)
I think Macro...would work for anything. Abstracts can be done in a macro way, so can any contemporary art. It just takes a bit of thinking power to come up with something, that's what makes these ideas such great challenges. The more difficult the better the challenge, the more interesting for all.
For in and out, above, about, below,
'Tis nothing but a Magic Shadow-show,
Play'd in a Box whose Candle is the Sun,
Round which we Phantom Figures come and go.
From Edward Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
Vertical gets my vote. Single color would be ok as well. I think many of us become couch potatoes (horizontal) and it is time to get up (vertical) and do something. Not all have a macro lens.
I particularly enjoy looking at photography with vertical images in mind. Today's world is filled with so many directional scenerary that it would be interesting to see what people come up with.
Vertical, too, seems like a good idea. Maybe "composition" was too vague... just that.. people seem more focused on subject matter than on how, it often seems, the overall shot or image is layed out and.. composed. Thought maybe if a contest were introduced, more people would make a conscious effort to consider the whole image. Anywho.. just my $.02

Verena - whilst in principle you are correct, considering we only received 4 non photographic entries for this contest which would have been a very good format - particularly for sketching for instance - I doubt that voting for another clearly photographic theme will encourage greater participation.
If I'm correct ... one has the option to change their vote if they wish to or submit a new topic / theme during the voting process ... but can only vote once.
A good variety of themes to select from ... methinks.
And although it is almost near the close of this particular poll ... something else to keep in mind for future contest topics ... the site's membership is international in flavour.
"Keep it simple, in other words", said the guy who ran the "Negative Space" contest.
(*shudders at the recollection of having to explain that one ... again ... and again ... and ...*)
