2006 Calendars Almost Ready

Submitted by caedes 11/25/05 8:28 AM GMT

I've finalized the designs for the 2006 calendars. Please proof read the calendar designs and constituent images before they go off to the printer. In particular I'm interested in making sure that the titles and author names go with the correct images. Depending on the response I will make the calendars available for purchase by this weekend.

There were many reasons why some photos did not get chosen. The biggest reason is that the author did not nominate any images. I also had to make decisions based on the resolution of the images that were uploaded as well as the season that the image fit into. There were many more summer images than winter, so many summer images could not be in a calendar. I also made some cuts based on the quality of the work and the suitability for print. I an author's image made all those cuts then I tried very hard to fit it in a calendar; that's why we have so many photography calendars.

After choosing the images to use, I put the requirements into a genetic algorithm in order to find the calendar configurations which satisfied the following criteria best:

  • Had the seasonal images in roughly the correct place.
  • Didn't have more than one author's image in a particular calendar.
  • Tried to include as many different artists as possible.
  • Tried to not include any image in more than one calendar.
  • Not too many images from the same gallery in the same calendar
After that I found that there were a few author's who uploaded images which didn't match the one's they had nominated, so I had to throw those out as well. Many images were also not cropped to the same size as the caedes.net wallpaper, so I had to go back through an fix those by hand. Finally the images were automatically prepared with borders and title/author names from the caedes.net image database.
