Elton John, for saying a week ago that all religion should be banned because certain ones don't accept gay people. I don't listen to his music anymore.
interestingly enough, the massage guywas head of the same church that produced..ready? tammy faye and jim bakker
as for not listening to someone's music becauseof their stance on religion.. i respect your opinion, gregg.... but if every musician who said or did something stupid or against one religion or another... was boycotted or banned... the music industry would go belly up
not an argument or counterpoint..just food for thought..
Well, I had heard about his comment, so I did a search...and what he was saying is that some organized religions are teaching hatred and bigotry by various actions against certain people...which, forgive me if I am wrong, but is really against the teaching of Christ. I respect your views, but for me, I have to say, I agree with the thought behind Elton's comment.
A good example of organized religion teachings/actions gone bad as manifested by someone supposedly very religious, would be the current fave TURKEY here at Caedes...Mel Gibson...Keith and Rob make good points as well.
I don't think EJ meant it as a mean comment, I think the actual thought behind it holds merit. WHY should gays be banned? WHY must women in some religions accept their lot and be second class citizens for being born non-male? If there was less emphasis on the who you are as opposed to who you are spiritually...in the case of EJ...he has donated/raised millions to an assortment of charities, the biggest being AIDS/Ryan White Foundation. He hasn't raped anyone, he hasn't murdered anyone...sure he's a diva, but anyone with that sort of tallent and money can be a diva...so is his being gay such a bad thing?? Despite all the good he has done, he is frowned upon by organized religions simply because he is gay.
**whew...Rob, I think the vending machine gave me your soapbox you put in it!!**

Ok, so Peter Jackson is suing saying NLC shorted him about $100m for the LoTR Trilogy...big deal...it made a few BILLION dollars...so paying the talented director another $100m is pocket change...not to mention, I would have actually paid the $10 to see The Hobbit (by Peter Jackson) in theaters...now...who knows...Ok...so I may be biased, but I think having PJ do The Hobbit would have raked in gazillions of dollars...I mean pretty much everyone loved how he did LoTR, so it would seem the logical choice to do the prequel.

I'm not really very religious these days, but I was raised in the Catholic faith. The problem, is that like it or not, homosexuality is a sin. It's a very clear cut thing mentioned in various places in the Bible. I'm not be fond of ostricization (sp?) of a person for living a certain lifestyle, and I try to be open minded about why certain people choose to be, or simply are, a certain way.
The thing with religion is it's worship-based, and we can't pick and choose the parts we like, the way we would at a cafeteria. One of the reasons Idon't go to church is because i'd be horribly hypocritical. In other words, the rules are as they are, and it's on me to embrace them in their entirety, or not at all. On the other hand, as not a Catholic, but as a conscientious member of society, I feel that we need to be inclusive and tolerant. But society and religion, while overlapping, are two seperate entities.
People love to recall Jesus as a loving Son of God, but seem to conveniently forget he was also as an angry avenging angel, who preached strict adherance to the teachings of his Father. I'm sorry that these teachings are difficult for some to accept, but re-interpreting them to ease one's conscience or suit one's lifestyle wasn't how it was layed out.
Two last things, and that's the overly enthusiastic way that far too many people 'enforce' these teachings, and the gross failure of those charged with keeping the faithful (clergy) in acting in an appropriate manner. The beauty of religion, at least in principle, is that it's voluntary. In other words, either you believe and believe entirely, or you don't. As for the latter item, I think the protection of abusive clergy members is a horrible example of misplaced loyalty. Clergy, like police, are placed in a position of authority and trust. Abuse of either (or both) should likewise come with the harshest of circumstances.
Ok, I just know this is going to open up the floodgates, but I hope at least someone out there gets where I'm coming from.
The other day, we were having a discussion in PSHE about terrorism and he was saying that all the "pakis" (not me saying that, quoted from him) should eave the country. He said that most were terrorists who like blowing everyone up, when we said that a VERY VERY small minority were terrorists. VERY small. Not even a percent. He just stereotypes anyone he can lay his hands on. It annoys me! The little turkey!
Turkey= every person in the world who bullies another.
there's no need to bully another...no need to call someone something harsh...no need to have to stand against someone because they think your a freak..when they don't even know you...

Okay, I don't normally discuss this stuff on the internet, but this had me shaking my head.
Thomas Frank, resident liberal for the Wall Street Journal: "the absurd notion that more government automatically equals less freedom." (You can read the full article here.

Pick an individual whom has either said or done something really stupid...and post it.
EXAMPLE:
TURKEY: John Kerry - for his really stupid statement about the intellegence of those stationed in Iraq...
