Straight from the FAQ. (Actually i find it funny b/c the FAQ asks exactly the same question you ask in the same way) :-S :
What is the c-index?
The c-index is a number between zero and 100 that aims to give a rough idea of the quality of an image. The primary use of the c-index is to enable users to sort galleries in order to bring the best images to the top. It is also used when automatically selecting images for displaying on the homepage. The c-index is not used to decide whether or not an image is promoted to the permanent image collection nor whether the image gets deleted (although it may be used to help the Praetors find good images worthy of permanent status).
Yes, but... if that number is, say, 50 - does that mean the image is better than 49% and not as good as 49%? Perhaps the question should be "is it related to the score in the voting booth - the number of visits/downloads. Is it a weighted average of voting scores? Do we all get selected from the same pot?
c-index? Hmm - comparison?
You example of 50% is correct, but it is a special case since the c-index distribution over all images is roughly gaussian. The value is derived exclusively from data gathered through the voting booth.
