I would like to download GIMP. I'm not familiar with ftp or what to do there. I have Windows XP (home version). Does anyone have a download site and version number for me?
Thanks.
on a side note: .. your browser should download from an FTP location transparently to you ... ie = no special software required ... FTP stands for FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL .. and is basically what the internet was before the glossy candy coating that is the WORLD WIDE WEB was applied to the surface

Thanks tim....I tried to download from &Crusader but it was a Zip file. I ALWAYS have trouble with zip files. But anyway, this wasn't very successful. I'll try phil's.
Good grief.....I have finally downloaded GIMP...it was not easy. I thought I was doing kind of well with computers until I hit this. But maybe most of you find zip and making sure that two programs end up in the same place easy....I sure don't. Anyway..I think I might have it now so will try out the suggestions given for the photography which I'm new at too! Wow.......WHAT A JOURNEY!
Of course it is not my realy name. It is my name for this site. I have never been here before. I'm am a amateur photographer...pretty home grown. Blow up internets? I have know idea in the world what you are talking about. Are you for real and why are you attacking me?
BTW...for the rest of you...I have tried using the paintbrush to black out backrounds but I have now idea how one would do that with say.....an allium. How do you navigate around all the little 'blossoms'?
Oh geesh....I'm so sorry &Keifer.....I just ready your post wrong. I thought you were saying that I was blowing up internets and I didn't get it at all. I'm just a small town older woman who is trying to make sense of the internet and photography. Please forgive me. I should have read your post more carefully!
...just remember, 'keifer's messages are all twisted and jumbled...you must read between the lines; other times they have nothing to do with the thread. =P
Software as powerful as "the Gimp" takes a while to master .. you will get befuddled quite often ... be patient
there are Gimp users here, but they are not always the most vocal .. so most of us will have to link you to tutorials .. and tutorials can be confusing without somebody looking over your shoulder, explaining
the concepts used by Gimp are the same as used by other programs .. like Photoshop ($600) .. or Paintshop Pro ($70) .. they may be located in different areas or called different things, but they accomplish the same things
so some of us can explain "in concept" what you need to do .. but not how to actually do it using GIMP
There are some excellent tutorials and resources for Gimp in various places. I know of some of them although I don't do photography. It isn't always easy to translate a Photoshop instruction or tutorial to Gimp, so it tends to be easier to find a Gimp tutorial if you can.
Make sure you are using the latest _stable_ release and not a developer one. It should be version 2.2.13. This will be easier to get to grips with than a development version.
I don't use Gimp on Windows, but feel free to PM me if you think I might be able to answer something. I use it extensively under Mac OS X (via X11).
Thanks.
