Hey all...I'm so grateful for all the positive feedback from everyone, but I wanted to hear some critiques for one of my images, Sea Isle Sunset 2, if you have a minute. I'm really interested in what needs improving and what the weak parts of the shot are. Don't be afraid to really dig in...I can take it!!! Any comments will only help me. Thanks in advance!!

Well, my first reaction was that it does not need any help .. 'tis a sunset with some inclusion of subtle foreground details

but .. to make this a stronger image you would need:

better sky activity .. dramatic clouds, etc (out of your control)

Middle Ground .. for a sunset, the light of the sun and sky will always take precedent .. any "subjects" in the middle area will almost by definition be silhouetted .. the boat that is in this image is a poor subject, in so far as it is not a good silhouette .. it is just a lump, that most people figure to be a boat because it's in the middle of the water .. give me a TALL SHIP with full rigging .. :o) .. or give me a tighter zoom on the boat so that it 'opens up' ... a flock of birds .. detail, like a water skier, being pulled by the boat, give me a full majestic oak tree ... without identifiable definition in your silhouettes, I would suggest leaving them out

Foreground .. for ME, the foreground waves are the best element in the image .. (well done) .. so many people don't even think of that part of their composition .. foreground is just a matter of "seeing" .. you have to 'see' it and then understand how it adds interest to an image .. to make THIS a better image, look for stronger objects like rocks, driftwood, people + dog silhouettes, kids running, a message in a bottle with the light coming through it.. a flock of sandpipers (seven pipers piping) .. sometimes a little fill-flash on an object to keep it from being a pure silhouette is advisable

oh, and .. don't be afraid to change your altitude .. somebody might shoot at you and miss because you chose to kneel down for an image, to change the perspective .. at just the right moment ...

(*you never know*)

needless to say, some of my examples may never show up in this area .. only YOU know that, they are just examples .. the bottomline is .. an image always needs a subject or subjects, even a beautiful sunset can benefit from a little help from interest and detail items .. or it won't hold our interest for long

The thing for me is that I feel that I am being drawan to look at two different places, the shoreline and the horizon and it confuses me. But I really like the color contrast. But take anything I say with a grain of salt because I've had no formal classes and don't always take the best pictures.
