Monitor Aspect Ratio

So, my laptop's monitor is about to fall off, and so i'm using my mom's computer...

The screen resoltion/aspect ratio seems to be a bit off. Everything is squished just a tiny bit.

Is there a way to change the resolution? (other than going to properties --> settings --> and move the slider; non of those options give the proper aspect ratio/resolution). Is there a way to manually put in numbers I want?

properties --> settings --> advanced

May be some stuff in there to tweek around on. General tab. Also, if a graphics card is installed it'll have it's own tab. Mucho stuff in there!!

Find the native resolution and set it to that on the 'slider' do-dad. Then adjust using your monitor buttons.

Most likely, you need to manually adjust the monitor. Unless its an LCD display, in which case, you need to find the native resolution of the monitor.

Thanks for the help, so far...

I forgot to mention i'm using a 'widescreen' LCD. The advanced settings don't really have anything to adjust what i need.

Where can i find the native resolution of the LCD? (note, i'm not too good with computers outside of photoshop)

I've tried each of the options the slider provides, yet they all a) make funny lines on my monitor b) squished c) elongated d) makes me feel like i'm running windows 95 e) all of the above.

Thanks again...noah

You can try to do a Google search for the Brand and model of the LCD. The manufacturer website should show the native resolution. Alternatively you can always try to track down the original manual/packaging. They should also have it printed in/on them.

It sounds to me like you don't have the driver for the monitor. Should be easy to find on the manufacturers website, or on a website like http://driverguide.com.
You'll need to register, however.

Hope this helps.

You will definitly want to set it to the monitors native resolution. Anything other than that will look funny (like what you described) on an lcd.

Most LCD's are plug-and-play so it shouldn't need a driver.

Come to think of it, the native resolution is often the farthest right on the slider...but not always.

I was thinking he might not have the correct driver because it wouldn't get the correct resolution for his screen.

Wide-screen 23- and 24-inch wide-screen models usually have a native resolution of 1920 by 1200, and 30-inch wide-screens have a resolution of 2560 by 1600. I would suggest checking the manufacturer's website, as others have.

That only tells you the computer's current resolution setting.
