This makes for some interesting reading if your a techie. The jpeg committee is looking to replace jpeg with jpeg xr from Microsoft. Won't happen for a while, so don't get too excited. Story is here

another MS jpeg basher? didn't they try this last year with something else - I cant remember. I don't think many people use JPEG2000 yet never mind taking on board another new format. It seems like fixing things that aren't really broken for the sake of it. It's a bit like bringing out a new smaller RAW format just as memory cards got huge capacities and became dirt cheap rendering it virtually redundant. but it could be that i'm just being overly cynical. again.

I agree Phil, why bother? Everyone grumbles about Microsoft and yet they still upgrade to the newest software. I don't think I have ever seen a satisfaction or your money refunded clause from Microsoft;-)

Almost everybody loves to bash MS and Monkey Boy especially Linux fanboys like me. After reading the article it sounds like Microsoft really did a sales job on JPEG.

I'm not upgrading to the newest software..I don;t use IE and I'm looking into a non MS OS (been looking a while but it's getting closer).

here's their first bash at squeezing out JPEG - except it was pointless and no better than JPEG2000 that was already available. when you have fast data links, fast, cheap & high capacity storage etc - who is that interested in compressing their images anyways?
