The Belle of the Ball
based on the world of Firefly by Joss Whedon

Maps spread across crates in the cargo bay, each one hand drawn meticulously, down to the very last room. Cat had them with her, mostly in case she was ever taken again or if she felt the absolute need to return and save the others, a course she had, yet, to pursue.

They will be here. She planted the need of her dagger in a group of rooms near the west wing, a place that would take them through almost all the compound from where their ship would dock.

What about Serenity? Kaylee asked. Will they board her?

Leave that to us. You just keep this beast running and make damn sure if anything electric gets on this ship, you disarm it. I left a shotgun and a few extra bullets. Cat looked at her. They'll be more worried about us than this little old ship. Anything this small is mostly consider a trash bin.

That's no way to talk about Serenity. Kaylee looked as if you had insulted her mother.

Kaylee, I meant no disrespect. What they wanted from her, they got and the other thing they desire is coming to them. You are just of no consequence.

'Ski grabbed and loaded the shotgun for Kaylee before strapping on his combat harness.
It was filled to the hilt with an assortment of weapons and extra ammo. We going to do the telepathy thing again?

It ain't telepathy, Cat smiled as she handed him an almost transparent head set. Makes it easier if we get separated.

Told you. Just follow the Grim Reaper. He'll lead you straight to me. 'Ski laughed.

Very funny. Would you give me a test? She pushed down the small power button as 'Ski's voice poured into her ear.

You ready to go dancing, my wife?

More than I want to admit. She whispered, the sound barely heard to the naked ear.

Serenity jerked a bit sending Kaylee into 'Ski's arms and Cat toward the crate. The latter caught herself before any damage was done to any of her precious cargo. Each grenade on her hip was still pinned. The tracker bean just kicked in. We've got about ten minutes.

I've already got my black tie. 'Ski motioned to the gun strap around his neck. I just don't want to hear how I never take you dancing.

One question before you two leave and get yourself killed. The wife thing... Kaylee asked.

Long story. Cat smiled.

Short version. She wanted my body, but I wouldn't give it to her without a wedding ring. I'm old fashion like that. 'Ski winked at Kaylee and ignored a look from Cat.

If we make it out alive, Kaylee, I'll tell you. Then, she looked directly at 'Ski. If we don't, do yourself a favor.

What's that? Kaylee glanced from one to another as Cat took a deep breath and slammed home the button to open the bay door.

Blow up yourself and Serenity. Don't let them do to you what they did to River.

'Ski walked up behind Kaylee, who had gasped at Cat's statement. His hand fell on her shoulder. We'll be back. She's just preparing you for the bad.

What do you mean? Like Cap'n and the others bein' dead? Kaylee's eyes watered a bit.

Smart girl. Now, get behind those barrels and stay down. 'Ski gripped the gun in his hand and walked up to stand near Cat. He cast a glance back to see Kaylee hugging her shotgun and hiding in the shadows.

Cat shifted beside him getting her muscles ready for the battle at hand. Lips, dry from the air coming in outside, split into a smile even 'Ski could not exactly read. You know, I promised myself I would never come back here. Even when they told me who to kill, I made them contact me outside. This place is a nightmare and now here I am, standing at a threshold I'm not sure I want to cross.

Could always carry you. Make the marriage official.

Can you ever be serious? Cat glanced at him.

The only thing I take serious, Babe, is killing. All the rest of my life is what it is. He sighed. We can always go back. Find another bank to rob, maybe another town to save. I'll go where you want, but make up your damn mind, before I do it for you.

Let's go see if they remember me then, shall we? She smiled finally, the old Cat emerging from the worried one. Her emerald eyes lit up as she stepped off the ship.

Right behind you, Babe.

***********************

The Academy, if one could call it such, looked more like a hospital than anything else. It was cover by computer panels and equipment, wires like veins fed information to the places that needed it. 'Ski watched warily as Cat walked down and into the docking bay.. She knew exactly where they were going.

No one had been waiting at the entrance, the landing bay simply a large metal room, where another ship was docked, about half the size of the firefly and shaped a bit like a disc. 'Ski recognized it right away as an Alliance scout.

Not much of a welcoming committee, he said, the sound echoing gently off the narrow hallway that lead to the next part of the Academy. His nose wrinkled at the smell of clean, too clean if you ask him and small sweepers continued to perform their jobs as the little crab shaped bots dodged around their feet.

They know I can find my way. Why waste men when they can lead me where they want us to go? Cat caught one of the sweepers in her hand and brought it up so they could see into its inner workings. There as its one eye was a camera laced between the two pincher brushes.

Bastards are following our every movements. He stared into the camera as close as he could without bumping the pincers. Can they hear us, too?

Of course.

Hey, purple bellies, ever heard that payback is a bitch. Well, there's your bitch and here comes that payback. He slammed his fist into the camera as it shattered. The other sweepers began to scatter as if someone had commanded them home. 'Ski cast a look toward Cat.

They are a hive. A.I. that can be controlled to a point. Once you hurt them, they no longer obey.

And why didn't you take care of it?

You look like you needed to punch something. Cat teased and received a smile from 'Ski.

Don't I always? He quipped as they came to a junction in the hallway. Screams could be heard echoing down the one and the other was as silent as the grave.Go toward the screams, Babe?

Nope. That's where they keep the ones who don't make it. The ones that go completely crazy and can't control the monster. They put them in cages for the interns to see and learn from. The ones screaming are interns that got a little too close.

'Ski shook his head. The bastards don't try and help them?

Ever heard the expression...fresh meat. Cat's eyes seem to almost glow for a second before returning to their normal color.

I'm beginning to understand why you call this place a nightmare.

We're just falling asleep, 'Ski. The real nightmare is down that hall. Her fingers brushed the side of the wall, where it looked to be scratches embedded in the surface. Here screams are a good thing. In this place, silence isn't just golden, it's deadly.

Here's mine. Capt 17 in a fanfic I'm writing.

Dabei war da am Horizont
Nur 99 Luftballons

99 Duesenjaeger

Hielten sich fuer Captain Kirk
Das gab ein grosses Feuerwerk
Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft
Und fuehlten sich gleich angemacht
Dabei schoss man am Horizont
Auf 99 Luftballons

99 Kriegsminister
Streichholz und Benzinkanister
Hielten sich fuer schlaue Leute
Witterten schon fette Beute
Riefen: Krieg und wollten Macht
Mann, wer haette das gedacht
Dass es einmal soweit kommt
Wegen 99 Luftballons

99 Jahre Krieg

Kriegsminister gibt es nicht mehr

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. for ever and ever. Amen
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours.
Now and for ever. Amen
The Lords prayer, or the "our Father prayer" is prayed daily by thousands of Christians, and can be seen both as a model for prayer, and as to be repeated as part of our daily prayer.
It starts by addressing God as our Father in heaven, that although His name is honoured, and above all other names, we are His children. As such, we occupy a place of privilege, and He wants us to spend time in prayer with Him.
The Lords prayer then moves on to pray that God's Kingdom, or rule, will become the norm on earth, replacing human rules and governments, which too often are driven by greed and power. Only then do we turn to our own needs, and ask our Father for our basic human needs to be satisfied, and that He would forgive the wrong things that we have done. We ask for God's guidance and protection as we journey through life. Finally we turn back to God, and acknowledge His supremacy and position as the Almighty ruler.

Alright my sister just did an assignment or something, so here goes...

A non-rigid airship, or blimp, is an airship without an internal supporting framework or keel. A non-rigid airship differs from a semi-rigid and a rigid airship (e.g. a Zeppelin) in that it does not have any rigid structure, neither a complete framework nor a partial keel, to help the airbag maintain its shape. Rather, these aircraft rely on both a higher pressure of the lifting gas (usually helium) inside the envelope and the strength of the envelope itself.

Blimps are also distinct from moored balloons. While often very similar in shape, moored balloons have no propulsion and are tethered to the ground in contrast to blimps which are free flying aircraft.

My mum was born in Hama, Syria but moved to Lebanon at the age of five and grew up there.

My mum has 2 sisters and 7 brothers.

After my mum got divorced to my dad she then got married to my stepdad Abdul.

Although my mum is embarrassing.
I love her so much

Hi Les!
Thank you *so* much for your comments on Contemplation and Hair Elastics. I wasn't expecting you to remember the old one (Contemplation). Wow! Anyway, my keyboard hasn't been exactly cooperative the past few days, so I could look at comments, but not reply. This gave over-eager me plenty of time to play around with your suggestions with the hair elastics... I see what you meant. As for the border, I'm not very good at them. Usually, I don't use them, as I don't particularly like them, but this one didn't look right without it. I knew it didn't look great, but I had no idea how to fix it. Anyway, I see what you meant with that, too. You give the most helpful, honest comments... I really appreciate your time. As for the length, well, I can be a tad verbose myself on occasion, I don't mind. Reading it gave me something to do. Thanks again, I truly appreciate it.

[complain] [message] A PARENT'S PRAYER

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They're only little once.

Grant me the wisdom to guide them down the path that their feet should take.

For I know that they can never turn back and walk those paths with me again.

Give me the wisdom to guide their feet
so that someday they'll be able to walk alone.

They're only little once.

Give me the time I need to enjoy them.

For I know that after they're grown, I'll never have another chance

to tell stories and pretend at those tea parties.

I'll never have another chance

to watch them in a school play or sing in church, or to see them catch that first fish or score that first goal or hit that first home run ball.

Give me the time in life's busy schedule
to have fun with my children.

They're only little once.

Let me be a loving parent.

Let me correct and not just punish, explain and not merely scold.

Let me know when to correct, and how often, and when it's best to just look the other way.

Help me be patient and give me a gentle hand to mould them into better people.

They're only little once.

Let me be a good teacher and an even better example.

Give me the right words and deeds to teach them.

Help me to teach them about You and how to walk in Your ways

so that when they are old they will not depart from Your ways.

For they're only little one time,

only innocent and trusting and pliable for a space of time, one minute in an eternity.

Let me do my best for them while I have the chance.

Amen

[complain] [message] The Belle of the Ball
based on the world of Firefly by Joss Whedon

Jeder war ein grosser Krieger
Hielten sich fuer Captain Kirk
Das gab ein grosses Feuerwerk
Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft
Und fuehlten sich gleich angemacht
Dabei schoss man am Horizont
Auf 99 Luftballons

99 Kriegsminister

[complain] [message] Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.

[complain] [message] Alright my sister just did an assignment or something, so here goes...

Closing

While we sit here arguing the facts of money, rights and cruelty, there is a chance that a criminal is facing parole right now. There is also a chance that a murderer could be committing another heinous crime, as we speak, due to early release. The U.S stopped using capital punishment from 1972 1976 and the murder rate more than doubled. Knowing that a child murderer/rapist lived in your neighborhood wouldnt exactly be the definition of comforting. I mean, Murderers can get early parole on good behavior, did they not already do enough to prove to society that they dont deserve the life they are living, or do we need to see them murder twenty or so more people before we get the point?

You often hear people saying that capital punishment is being cruel to a person, a human being, but that person is likely being hung, in which he/she dies in less than 20 seconds. That is a harmless, merciful procedure. But what about the victim, who, lets say, was stabbed 10 times and was left on the sidewalk to die in their own pool of blood only to be discovered by someone who just happens to walk down that dark street? Could you still consciously stand there and tell me that capital punishment is unjust.

There is no excuse under any circumstances to murder another human being. Whether they plead insanity, or temporary black out, there is definitely no excuse. If a murderer is put on death row and appeals on account of rights and freedoms, then they need to consider this; If you want to take the life, rights and freedom from other human beings then you should not expect your rights and freedoms to come into play. You are an adult, if you want to commit crimes, then you take the punishment. You reap what you sew, if you murder, you have no rights to life as you have taken other peoples away.

Capital Punishment has proven effective before, and now that we have the technology to pursue a higher degree of investigation, its likely safer than before. Clean up the streets people, no child should be born and have to open their eyes to such a world.

lol closing for capital punishment debate... oh gosh

The Environmental Impact of Uranium Mining

September 1999

All uranium mining and milling activities in Australia, covering a period of 47 years, have had serious environmental impacts.

A major environmental impact of the Radium Hill mine in SA was its contribution to the UK nuclear weapons programme including the nuclear weapons tests that led to eviction of indigenous people and to contamination from radioactive and toxic materials at Emu Plains and Maralinga.

The remediation of the worst contaminated sites involving plutonium dispersion is only now, some 30 years later, being carried out at great cost. Much finely dispersed plutonium and other toxic materials will inevitably escape this remediation process. The consequent health risk for any person living in the area would be unacceptable.

Mining and milling of uranium ores at Radium Hill in South Australia from 1951 to 1961 produced radioactive tailings which were either stockpiled, used as ballast on railway lines, or stored in a tailings dam at Port Pirie.

Wastes from the processing of uranium concentrate from Radium Hill and of rare earths at a site adjacent to the sea at Port Pirie from 1955-62 were stored in a tailings dam.

The management of the tailings dam deteriorated over the years to the point that children were playing on its surface. After six years of community pressure and after high tides breached the walls of the tailings dam in 1981, the dam wall was increased in height, the tailings were covered, the area was re-fenced, and a trench was constructed to drain the tailings into an evaporation pond.

It took 30 years to take these stopgap remedial measures.

In 1982, at the Honeymoon uranium mine in SA, a process known as in situ leaching was trialed. In this process, corrosive liquids are injected into the ore bearing strata with the aim of dissolving minerals which are then brought to the surface through pumps. These pumps must be placed and operated in such a way as to prevent the leach solution from moving vertically and horizontally into other strata, especially aquifers.

The mining trials were vigorously opposed by the environment movement in South Australia. Eventually the trials were discontinued by the Government after it was found that blockages had occurred which affected the ability of the operators to control the movement of the leach solution. This process is again being used at the Beverley and Honeymoon uranium mines.

It is noteworthy that the problems that characterised uranium mining activities 40 years ago are the same ones which we encounter with present day uranium mines. These problems involve water use, water contamination, tailings or wastes (including run off) and health and safety.

Just as with the earlier ventures, the companies involved, while freely admitting to past mistakes in the industry, deny that there is a current problem.

For example, in a recent article titled "Uranium mines to shed shoddy '50s", the uranium mine at Rum Jungle was described by a water quality scientist for the Northern Territory Government as "a very shoddy mining operation".

The article describes how the Rum Jungle uranium mine contaminated the Finniss River, how mine rehabilitation in the 80's had failed and that a current five year monitoring and rehabilitation project begun in 1993 had been successful in restoring the area.

This represents a span of some 40 years between creation of a major environmental problem and its remediation which, however, can not undo the damage already done.

According to the scientist, any future project at Jabiluka would be accompanied by continual supervision and rehabilitation.

Similarly, the chief executive of Energy Resources of Australia (ERA)has claimed that a lot has happened in terms of state of the art technology for building uranium mills and tailings operations in the last 17 years. Doubtless, he was thinking of the less than perfect environmental record of ERA's Ranger uranium mine.

These assurances are in stark contrast with recent experience at Roxby Downs where, despite being a very recent operation by a very large and well resourced mining company (WMC) and despite monitoring by both the company and the SA Government, there was a massive loss of liquid into the ground beneath the tailings retention system.

This leak occurred over a period of several years and there are no plans to clean up the toxic, radioactive material which leaked from the tailings retention system. The company involved (WMC) was not financially penalised for its failure to prevent escape of the contaminated water.

Why do I put so much effort into something that you fight against so fiercely. You lead me to believe that you are interested in spending time with me just to get rid of someone else or something. You basically use me to push someone else away and let me believe that you will want me in the end, but you never do. And you dont even care that Im sitting here in front of your right now crying and youll call me pathetic or you will just ignore me.

I was thinking of just a simple service and bury in the churchyard. A frown forms, highlighting the lines etched on his face from years of outdoor life. That's alright ain't it? What she would have wanted. He sinks down in the chair his head bowed, staring at the dark carpet as a wave of sadness crosses his features. The room lapses into silence broken only by the repetitive beating of the clocks metal heart.

And now for the news....
