i don't use this site much anymore.. i still think it's good and it has something that deviantart doesnt have. Not to mention that it represents a different demographic than deviantart in general which means it is of benefit to remain an active participant in both. However, having been a member of this site for a long time i have watched many changes pass by over the last few years and i'm not sure all of them have worked.

I was a strong advocate for a 'friends watch' system on this site a while ago before we had one. i remember thinking how handy it would be to be notified when my friends on the site posted new pictures.. but having used this system for a long time i'm not so sure it has brought any benefit to the site overall. I have not commented on a picture that was not in the top pictures or in my personal notifications for a long time. i remember a time when i used to give and receive comments to and from many different users on this site long after i had posted an image, but nowadays i find this is not the case. images more than a week old do not receive new comments and i myself do not post on images other than those i have been requested to coment on or notified of. i think the comment request is an excellent idea, as it stops artists from simply commenting on pictures they already like; instead real critique is given.

Secondly.. the new c-index system seems awfully harsh. For example.. a friend of mine has an incredibly popular image on this site:

http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=graphics_pro89-1109136374.jpg

compare the downloads, views and the c-index and think to yourself what my friend is supposed to understand from this. a c-index of 54 would suggest his image is of a relatively average/poor quality.. but 12,000 views and many downloads suggest this image is a masterpiece that has drawn many admirers from across the world. what am i to draw in conclusion from similar situations i find my own iamges in!

Welllll ...

This is my own personal take ...

The image in your above link is in the 'permanent' galleries, so it was recognized for the work of art that it is. I happen to like it as well.

The C-Index?

A simple gauge, use or take what you will from it. The fickleness of voting behaviours of some could be because they rush through in order to fulfill their voting requirements in order to post their own images.

Add in personal tastes on the part of the voters, lack of knowledge of the software used and expertise needed to create an image ... again, like in your example above ... the voting booth can be a bit of a crap shoot at times.

I suppose a case could be made for both the site here and dA, that given the volume of images ... it is inevitable that some images will fall through the cracks and end up on the back pages with little attention given to them.

Personally, I still try to give honest and constructive criticism on images that I view and comment on. Some personal responsibility has to be assumed on the part of ALL members for the current state of affairs, as you outlined above.

I don't do the friend's list thing. Let that aspect fall to the wayside some time back, as I found it was taking far too much time to keep up. And I would rather comment on a few, as opposed to many, and keep my commentaries constructive.

As an f.y.i., discussions are currently being held to address many of the things that you make mention of in an effort 'to right the ship'. If I can borrow a phrase here.

Do you have any suggestions yourself? That might address the inequities and shortcomings of the current system in place and make the site a more enjoyable experience overall?

Just came back for a moment, as I read through the comments on the image you provided a link to ... there was some valid points made and some rather good criticism offered up to your friend.

So ... having said that, is it our infamous number that is perplexing you more so in this instance?

Just trying to keep things straight for your discussion as with the topic, or topics mentioned by you ... things can get muddled in the course of the discourse rather quickly.
