“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
What is that in context? Sounds very interesting. :-)
You mean like when you split up with someone and look back at all the warning signals that he wasn't who you thought he was?
Welll, I stand corrected ... it was Maya Angelou that had said this and was quoted by Oprah Winfrey.
The meaning? Here is an excerpt from Oprah Winfrey's Commencement Address at Wellesley College on May 30, 1997 addressing those very words:
"One of the other great lessons I learned taught to me by my friend and mentor, Maya Angelou and if you can get this, you can save yourself a lot of time. Wendy and I have had many discussions about this, particularly when it comes to men, although she has a very nice one right now. Remember this because this will happen many times in your life:
When people show you who they are, believe them, the first time. Not the 29th time! That is particularly good when it comes to men situations because when he doesn't call back the first time, when you are mistreated the first time, when you see someone who shows you a lack of integrity or dishonesty the first time, know that that will be followed by many, many, many other times that will at some point in life come back to haunt or hurt you. When people show you who they are, believe them, the first time. Live your life from truth and you will survive everything, everything, I believe even death. You will survive everything if you can live your life from the point of view of truth. That took me a while to get, pretending to be something I wasn't, wanting to be somebody I couldn't, but understanding deep inside myself when I was willing to listen, that my own truth and only my own truth could set me free."

Yes... does make a lot of sense. Sometimes we need to give chances, though, because misunderstandings arise. "Give lots of people lots of chances," said a friend one time. Not sure why that stuck in my mind.

"Most artists go to new places you've never been to before and say, "If you stay in the exact position, look at this, and focus on this, this is what you'd see." That's fine, but I prefer artists that go to normal places you've probably been to and say "If you were to go in this exact position, look at this and focus on this, and then sniff thi and let the hallucinations come and go, this is what you'd see.""
My grandpa was the wisest person I've ever known ... quite funny too. One thing I remember him saying to me all the time is "tomorrows dreams are just a moment away" & then sometimes he was much more straight forward & say "just don't dream about something, do it".
My favorite is when my grandpa asked me, "Do you want to hear a great fish story"?
My reply, "Of course" (I could never resist listening to his stories)
He said, "Then grab your fishing pole & lets go catch a few".
Those were his last words I would ever hear him speak ... 8 years ago.
I did go fishing that day ... even though my grandpa was unable to ... he was there in spirit.
I believe he was telling me over the years to live each & every day to its fullest ... don't let a moment escape you ... and he did just that his entire lifetime.
I know it's personal, but thought I would share it. Also taught me to listen to what others have to say ... good or bad ... someday those words, no matter how simple they are, may have a greater impact on your life.
I found this quote several years ago .... words to live by.
“Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.”
"Think what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about three o'clock every afternoon and then lay down on our blankets for a nap." - Robert Fulghum
If you want to have a good day, just have a good day.
Ignore stupid things that tick you off. That way they don't build up.
Just be happy about the good things, tell your friends you love them very much and hug everyone at every possible occasion, and just enjoy doing the things you have to do.
Sing while doing everything. Screw anyone who says you can't sing. It's a compliment.
