Some of you may have noticed the new "Community" gallery at the top of the gallery list. THis gallery has been created as an attempt to allow members a place to share images with their fellow caedesians that may have otherwise been discouraged in the past. You should be able to upload your images directly to the "Community" gallery now as an option rather than the "New images" gallery (if anyone has trouble with this please let me know).
When deciding whether to upload to the "Community" gallery or the "New Images" gallery, I believe the most important thing to consider is your motivation for uploading the image. If you are uploading an image you are proud of based on its artistic merit, something you want to share with the world, something you believe would make a great wallpaper for someone who doesn't know you, it should go in "New Images". If it's something you want to share with your friends, or the community, because you feel it is of interest to people you know, put it in "Community".
Please note that the decision of which gallery an image goes on is not based on subject; therefore the "New images->Pets" and "New images->Self Portraits" galleries will remain. You only need to look at the permanent galleries for Pets to see that it is perfectly possible to take a pet photo that has plenty of artistic merit (we will probably go through the "Self portraits" gallery and move anything that doesn't fit into the Community gallery over the next few weeks/months). I will also leave the "UK Get Together" gallery in New Images, this should be used for artistic images (such as those taken at the abbey) whilst the group photos etc. should go in Community.
It will probably take a little while for everyone to get used to this and for it to be running smoothly and there may be changes or the gallery might even be removed if it isn't working; however it's my hope that this might help resolve the snapshot issue once and for all... any feedback or suggestions are welcome. There will probably need to be some more subgalleries added for example (I am thinking of maybe adding a "Community->Humor" gallery... any takers?)
PS I only just added the subgalleries so it will probably take a while before they are visible in the gallery list and on the upload page. If you have anything to upload in the meantime just put it in "Community" and we can move it into the appropriate subgallery later. And I should also explain that the asterisk is my attempt to try and define the gallery from the other "Normal" galleries (this is one of the things that might change later down the track).
One benefit of volunteering for the community gallery... since it isn't "polluting" the new images gallery, there's probably no need to archive anything in there...
perhaps, but I asked because I misread, or misunderstood. Once I saw the only three galleries in community were Pets, Self Portraits, and the UK thing, I had a clearer understanding.
I am thinking you meant something similar to "Scraps" on Deviantart? If so, I can certainly see merit in that idea further down the track... but personally I think it might require more thought and development than just a sub-gallery in Community, as I picture it getting a bit messy. But I am open to counter arguments.
I noticed the Community Gallery earlier & think it's a great idea. Many member's know each other well enough that they wish to share something of personal interest (et al ... pets, self-portraits, other) that doesn't have any artistic merit. I know with some of my own images ... I ask myself "artistic wallpaper"? or "snapshot"?. If I'm ever in doubt what category the image falls into ... I choose to not upload.
The Community Gallery gives members a new option which I like alot. I presume if an image is uploaded to the Community Gallery it will be in the member's personal gallery as well, no?
Humor Gallery? ... yes, as I remember not too long ago that such a gallery had been mentioned by a member.
Best of all ... it is nice to see this great site taking a new direction. Hope it works out with the snapshot issue & all. :-)
Yes Danika, images in the "Community" gallery will appear in the members personal gallery. It is in fact just the same as all the others, except the idea was that images would be uploaded directly to "Community" rather than going through the normal process of appearing in "New Images" and then being archived or promoted.
As is turns out, I was mistaken in my belief that members were able to upload directly to "Community"; as it turns out, the "New images" gallery had simply automatically created a "New Images->Community" sub gallery... I probably should have realised that I guess. So at present I guess we will have to just manually move the images once a day or so, but that's fairly straight forward since they are all grouped together. Maybe Geri will be able to fix it so that we can bypass the "New Images" gallery altogether when he has time.
PS I just created a new sub gallery, inspired by Leslie's latest upload, "Gifts". I think we see more than enough of those to make such a gallery useful!
OK... I told you things might change, although you probably didn't expect them to do so this quickly... :-)
The "*" I originally put in front of the gallery name seemed to be causing an issue with moving images to it, so I have renamed it "Your community"... so it will be at the bottom of the list now, instead of the top. Hopefully it will function properly for me now...
Hey!! My amazingly cool desktop wallpaper was moved to this new fangled directory... THIS ONE !! That's a "true" piece of art and I'm sure admired by all!!
It's a tough postion not to mention the 'depth' I'm gettin' to the pick...I mean, piece!!
