It seems to me we have a problem here with getting the images uploaded in a reasonable time frame. I really think this site needs to do a better job with it's posting of the images. When I first joined sometimes the first image was on display before you could get the second sent in. Some images will be on the front page for 3 hrs (new images) and then when yours finally are posted they never even make the front page because there are so many backed up. C'mon guys, lets get a grip and get something done about this. It's ridiculous. John aka jswgpb

Well personally I think the problem is more that the site has created the expectation that images will appear as soon as they are uploaded. I can't really see an issue with uploading an image in the evening and having it on the site by the next day myself. Was a time not so long ago that it was unheard of that you could take a photo and have it displayed all round the world within a few hours... maybe we just need to all learn to be a bit more patient?

OK I am done being all philosophical now...

The problem is that one of the mods has to see it. We volunteer our time, because we like you, our friends, and because we like your art, and because we're honored to be able to help you get your stuff seen all around the world. On the other hand we have lives, and most of us have hit-or-miss abilities to check in. When we do we approve everything that passes the extremely liberal COC. I check in at least three times every day, and usually approve all images awaiting acceptance. Is that too long a wait time? I'm asking seriously here, because I want to make the site better for us all.

I'm patient.. so while waiting for my picture to upload I use the time to write a in-depth narrative to go along with the picture when it appears.....normally ranging from a few minutes upward to an hour.

Are you getting the white screen of death? (as in you press upload, the screen goes white and it never goes on from there)

If so, what size and format are the files you're trying to upload? Dimensions and kb please.

sorry for delay in replying animaniactoo, beem really busy. Theres is no white screen of death, ii just press "upload" & nothing happens. Last image I tried was in PNG format & 3648 x 2736 pixels. I assumed it might be a server issue as I don't know how files are routed to the Caedes server & some ISP's are blocking mail & uploads from my ISP because of a spam problem. All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Could it be file size rather than dimensions? I gather files need to be below 10 Mb to load.

I see you've gotten (truly superb) images up successfully in the past so there's definitely hope that we'll soon be seeing more of your stuff.

(If a mod happens by again, perhaps they'll tell us why there's nothing in the FAQ or on the upload screen about max file sizes and dimensions and the necessary color profile -- 'cuz that would be really, really useful stuff to post in a prominent place, eh? Hint. Hint.)

Ok, think Leslie is on to something with the total ... total size of the files you are trying to upload Barry.

Although there is no total file size restriction ... as in MB's, etc. ... 10 does seem to be the magic number before servers start to time out and you are met with an unsuccessful upload.

Since you made mention of the PNG format, those files will be larger than those of JPEGs.

The original size, speaking in pixels now ... was 3648 x 2736. Too big, the limit is 3000 a side.

If and it sounds like you did, resize it to just below 3000 on the one side ... in a PNG format, it could still be that the total file size is too large.

How to check on total size ... right click on the file, click on Properties at the bottom of the action menu that pops up ... it should be stated in KB's or MB's.

Last thing ...

What type of internet connectivity do you have? Cable? DSL?

Dial-up? *shudders*

/\ Just kidding a bit there.

I'm in total agreement with you on this topic John

I can recall times when some of my uploads appeared in less than 5 minutes, now it seems a 3 hr wait is the norm regardless of the time. :o(
Perhaps it's a good thing that Caedes runs a strict COC however they often fail to protect images from copyright theft once there on.

I can no longer upload images late at night now, as I need my sleep, & wouldn't be able to check my narrative until the following morning. This is because I usually put in several links, & paragraphs etc, & often need to correct errors in the uploaded narrative later. It seems a shame barriten has side tracked the Caedes volunteers from an important issue, perhaps they'd care to comment to your topic directly now ?

Anyway Caedes has promised to resolve the issue John, & I look forward to seeing the results. :o)
Bye now Phil

Well, the title of this thread ... Phil ... is "Upload Woes", and upload woes is what barriten had. So ... he politely asked for some assistance.

End of that particular matter.

And there is no reason you cannot upload and then check back later. I am sure no one will take offense if a link or two in your accompanying narratives doesn't work. Same goes for grammar mistakes.

End of that particular matter.

And as you say, and I quote;

"Anyway Caedes has promised to resolve the issue John, & I look forward to seeing the results. :o)"

Sounds good good to me.

Bear with and hang in there. :o)

Well if you don't mind waiting approximately 150 minutes for an upload to get online you must have an awful lot of spare time Ron. :o)

I myself suspect there aren't enough mods performing this job of inspection now. Maybe that's the only significant reason for this inconvenient delay we've all been experiencing lately.

Caedes proof me wrong with some balanced info we can all read, & one final point restated what is the point of all this upload inspection when images are still so easy to rip off here ?

I re-entered this discussion folks simply because I've been waiting well over 2 hrs for a upload to get online.

because clearly, its a quick and simple operation to scour the tens of millions of images on the web before we can definitely confirm a suspected rip is in fact a rip before we piss someone off arbitrarily by rejecting their images on a whim that it is a rip. oddly, despite our best efforts, occasionally ones slip through the net but we always try to sweep them under the carpet as soon as is humanly possible as part of The Big Conspiracy.

I am honestly not wanting to cause anyone any hassle here but I need some help and I'm not sure where to go. I uploaded a photo at around 7:00pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) then went to upload a second when I got the "cannot upload more than twice in 24 hours" message. I haven't posted in a little while so I could only assume that I had somehow accidently posted the same pic twice. Thus I have been waiting patiently for the last five hours or so for the uploads to appear so that I can delete the extra image before people try to comment and get confused. I have no problem with it taking time to approve images, I completely understand and appreciate the hard work put into running this site by all involved. It's just that it's after midnight (AEST) now and I would like to go to bed soon. I confess I don't have much understanding of how the process technically works but I was wondering if one of you lovely moderators could just delete/not upload the duplicate image (if that is what has happened), for me please? Thanks, Kelcey.

I certainly don't expect the mods to be any of the above (although I did find an insomniac in Trisbert to whom I am most grateful:) but I also don't expect a sarcastic reply that makes me feel awful about seeking help when I need it. No, not at all. I merely made an abservation that it had been 8 hours since the last image appeared.
I have lost count of the number of times I have expressed appreciation for the workers that keep the site running. Without being pushed, or changing shoes.
I am trying to remember when I last saw apreciation from a mod for those who keep them occupied by uploading. . . . :)

Pierre has been away on holidays and he approves alot of images. Personally I stopped approving images about two weeks ago as I am moving to an area without internet in a few days so I thought I'd give people time to get used to it. Now that Pierre is back it might speed up again but those that go by southern hemisphere time might have to get used to waiting until a northener comes online before their images get approved.

Just to clarify a few issues.....

‘I can recall times when some of my uploads appeared in less than 5 minutes, now it seems a 3 hr wait is the norm regardless of the time. :o(
Perhaps it's a good thing that Caedes runs a strict COC however they often fail to protect images from copyright theft once there on.’

Uploads are approved generally as soon as a mod sees them, hence they will only appear if a mod is there. I cant ever recall a situation here on Caedes when you could guarantee ‘instant gratification’ and even several years ago you could still face lengthy delays running into hours.

I’m not sure what more you imagine we could do to protect images from copyright theft once they are on the site except for ( a ) making it a viewable only gallery and stopping downloads completely or ( b ) investing in some very expensive DRM software and hardware that would require everyone on the site to cough up a regular subscription which will never be workable. If someone breaks into your house and steals all your stuff, is it the fault of the guys who built your house or the people that broke into it. As I recall, when people called for the site to change to allow larger and more varied size uploads, the caveats were made in several forums that posting your work in higher resolution made it more tempting to image thieves so you did so at your own risk.

‘what is the point of all this upload inspection’

We try to keep the site as distant from the image dumping ground concept of Flickr or Webshots as we can so as to promote genuine artistic growth. Both of these sites are relatively unmoderated and rely solely on the user base to self moderate. Clearly that doesn’t work too well and whenever we have tried similar things here the results have always been the same. Similarly, when we increased temporarily the number of people able to approve images, uploads were on the site quicker but it also gave us more time to be selective in our choices and critique. This prompted howls of outrage and Caedes, having been bombarded with indignant PM’s asking why the populous didn’t want to see out of focus pictures of their neighbours cat, reverted back to the current system.

‘Some images will be on the front page for 3 hrs (new images) and then when yours finally are posted they never even make the front page because there are so many backed up.’

Whilst I don’t see the big deal of being on the front page – any amount of high upload activity will see pages changing rapidly. Even if you ideal scenario of moderators approving images instantly applies – you could pretty much guarantee that your image would be off the front page in less than 2 hours.

Folks, delays getting images approved are nothing new. Hours for approval has been the norm for as long as I have been contributing images. Some do get through quickly but in my experience they are the exception rather than the rule.

If the delay bothers you could try uploading your images before you do something else like going to work or sleep, then enjoy the result of your upload later. Your image might not be on the front page later but isn’t it the response to your image from other people that you enjoy rather than seeing it on the front page?

PS: I will enjoy any response to this after I’ve had a sleep :-)
