THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!

If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears
with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking
twenty-five miles to school every morning ... uphill; BOTH ways

yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up,
there was no way in hell I was going to lay
a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty,
I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my
childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!
And I hate to say it but you kids today you
don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The
Internet. If we wanted to know something,
we had to go to the damn library and
look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!
There was no email!! We had to actually write
somebody a letter ...with a pen!
Then you had to walk all the way across the street and
put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to
steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself!
Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ
usually talked over the beginning and @#*% it all up!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting!
If you were on the phone and somebody else called
they got a busy signal, that's it!

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either!
When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was!
It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your
bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you
just didn't know!!! You had
to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video
games with high-resolution 3-D graphics!
We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and
'asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your
imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or
screens, it was just one screen forever!

And you could never win. The game just kept getting
harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such
thing as stadium seating!
All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy
or some old broad with a hat
sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!

Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels
and there was no on screen menu and no remote
control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on!
You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off
your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel
and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons
on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?!
We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat
something up we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire .
imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing
and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot.

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids
today have got it too easy.
You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted
five minutes back in 1980!

Regards,
The over 30 Crowd

also, remember now you think you are indestructible and life will be peaches and cream forever, but when you hit thirty - you are screwed - it's like an oil spillage on the highway that makes you skid uncontrollably towards 40.

also - and not wanting to sound too cynical (see it as the voice experience) - never tell yourself that things can only get better as (a) you probably don't know the half of it yet and (b) trust me, things can ALWAYS get worse.

gppd grief..you had it good as a kid Rob :o)

we had NO TV for awhile (they weren't made yet), no car until I was 18 (they were for rich people)...2 TV stations that went off at 9PM..we used to sit and watch the 'test' pattern on the weekkend..which amounted to some lines on the screen....no color TV, we listened to programs on the radio..yep, they really had those.. people read the story lines....sorta like "Law & Order" but not quite as sopohisticated...lol
And, I only walked uphill home from school....it was downhill on the way to the bus line :=)
I could go on & on, but it would be ad nauseum :)

I agree with Mimi, Rob! I may only be a few years older than you, but what a few years they must have been! I didn't have Atari 2600, I had 'Pong'. For a real challenge it came with "Hockey" and you had 2 paddles on each side instead of 1.

Call waiting? Until I was 12 we still had a party line and the woman behind us loved to talk for hours at a time...usually when I was awaiting a critical phone call to know whether or not the trade for that much needed football card was gonna go through.

Speaking of which, there were no factory sealed complete sets of this years Topps collection, we had to buy them one pack at a time, hoping for that ever elusive card that they apparently only made 4 of for the entire world.

Cable TV? That was for rich people, we made do with 3 network channels on our B&W console (5 if you included PBS which was pretty useless once you outgrew Sesamee Street and one UHF channel that only came in if someone stood there and held the rabbit ears).

If they wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes in 1980, they wouldn't have survived 3 minutes in the early 70's!

On the bright side Safe Sex was not getting caught by your parents, crack was something you saw when the plumber was fixing the pipes, and we took mind altering chemicals to make the world seem crazy. Now the world is crazy and we take Prozac to make it seem sane.

And always remember when life is getting to you - there is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face. (Ben Williams)

Doctors were actually known to make house calls on occasion... bicycles had only two speeds - start and stop - and no one wore helmets... come to think, there weren't any seatbelts in cars, we fought over the back seat windows and sometimes stood up to see better out the front window... my parents called the refrigerator the 'icebox'... the milkman delivered milk in glass containers once a week... we couldn't afford a TV until I was eight years old, and it was B&W with only the big three channels, NBC, CBS, and ABC, UHF came later and if you didn't have rabbit ears a bent hanger would do... remotes with mute buttons were nonexistent, you actually had to get up and change the channel yourself... sometimes the horizontal would start flipping the picture and you'd have to fine tune it manually, and you couldn't watch at all when the 'sunspots' were really active... Saturday morning cartoons were Looneytunes, Andy's Gang ("Plunk your magic twanger, Froggy!" "Hiya kids, hiya, hiya!") Yogi Bear ("Heyyy, BooBoo!"), and The Little Rascals.... come to think of it, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, and Peewee Reese were just three of the biggies on baseball cards... it was a rite of passage when you were old enough to sit up and watch Gunsmoke on Saturday night... There weren't any 'puters, electronic games, cell phones, ipods, etc., so you had to (gasp) play outside... And outside was where I wanted to be most of the time, playing 'cowboys and Indians' (I was always an Indian, it was much cooler), riding my bike, climbing trees, swimming, building underground forts, exploring, pretending, collecting things like interesting stones and fireflies in bottles, polliwogging... and that's just the kid stuff... Imagine, there weren't even any electric basses or guitars...

I'm 50. Came up in the 60's. It was a magic time...

Our phone number was CE-39268 (Central Exchange).

We responded with "Yes sir, no sir" and "Yes ma'am, no ma'am" to our elders.

We did not barge in on adult conversations for anything of less urgency than decapitation.

If we used 'colorful' language, my father would grate a bar of Kirk's Coco Castile soap across our front teeth a few times.

We were one of the few families in our neighborhood who had a color TV because my father did electronic repair on the side. It had a 20" round tube and a cabinet about 40"x40"x40" and you could smell the ozone from the high voltage supply. We had 3 UHF TV channels.

We looked forward to visits from the Fuller Brush man, the Jewel T salesman, the milkman (glass jugs) and the occasional peddler selling anything from apples to homemade lawn furniture. The Fuller brush man cried at my mother's funeral.

When a new family moved into the neighborhood with lots of children, an old car and a daddy with a new job, my folks welcomed them with a couple bags of groceries. We were poor, too!

When a neighbor's 1-1/2-year-old wandered over dirty and in need of an 'oil change', my mother sent him back home with a bath, a new diaper and some of our clean baby clothes.

If we made trouble in the neighborhood, we would be chastised by the offended neighbor, then paddled but good when we got home (dad preferred using his belt). Talk about a WAN, we couldn't get away with anything!

We ate what my mom fixed us. If we didn't like dinner, we'd like it less for breakfast.

Our choice of hair style was what dad gave; no extra money for barbers (5 boys).

We did whatever jobs we could invent to raise $$$ (what's an allowance?) I mowed lawns (my mower), sold garden seeds, aprons and pot holders made by a local widow. Self-esteem came from accomplishment, not compliment.

I'd go back to those days anytime.

Kids / teens definitely do have it easy nowadays. I remember getting your driver's licence at 16 necessarily didn't mean you could use the family car whenever you pleased. I had to save up enough money on my own to buy my first car ('68 Chevy Impala) plus pay the insurance premiums so I could get to my 3 part-time jobs. My other option was simply walk. I know so many parents now that buy their kids their first car & by no means it's not an old beater to drive around.

No video games that I can recall ... I didn't even know Atari 2600 existed. For entertainment ... there were games & activities such as Mary mentioned. Then one could go to the local arcade with a pocket full of quarters where you could find an assortment of pinball machines, foosball (table football), & pool tables (something I continue to enjoy). Then when PacMan came along we had to stand in line to wait your turn to play.

It was considered a privilege to use a rotary phone to call a friend. Now every kid / teen owns a cellphone. Perhaps in some situations it's a good thing.

Curfews 30 years ago ... if one was a minute late past the curfew hour ... you got grounded for a week. I will confess to that many a time. I ask teens now ... didn't your parents ground you & they say, "what's that"?

There were no shopping malls to hang out at, but it was a big deal to go to the five & dime store even if you didn't buy anything.

Peer pressure??? ... I'm not sure if much has changed or if it ever will. Kids / teens will always face new challenges in a growing society. Though I believe there is much more awareness than back when I was a teen.

Signed ... someone that's over 30. :-)

Hey, I didn't even own a computer until I turned 43. Where was I? Actually there was no reason for me to own one before that time. I knew how to use a PC for many, many years at work, but also had the privilege of doing the fun stuff as well when it was break time.

I usually filled my evenings by reading a book ... I kind of miss that. :-)

Phones? Radio? TV?

I remember having to chop wood in order to build a fire and then send smoke signals as a means of communication.

And one had to hope the winds were kind, 'cause ... lemme tell ya ... not much room for error in spelling. :o|

Libraries? Internet?

Ooooh no, it was Uncle Jack's repository of world knowledge that 'we' had to rely on.

Messed up my thinking for a bit. As Uncle Jack had a slight speech impediment. The 'birds and bees' sounded to me like the 'bards and beers'.

Infinitely more interesting on many levels. Well, that is ... until ... I reached puberty.

Still, with that said ... having a love for Shakespeare instilled in me was my in with the females. *wink* *wink*

You try to tell kids that these days?

And they just don't understand. :o\

Now if you'll excuse me ... going to get on my ham radio and see 'sup on the airwaves.

That thing??

'Tis amazing.

I had a Dodge Dart which I worked my ass off to buy...no 16th B-day Benz.

Rated R movies meant you had to find some homeless guy to play daddy for 5 minutes, or there was no seeing the movie.

Truency officers actively searched for you if you ditched class. And if you screwed up in school, you met with the parental unit and the teachers/principal...then got grounded for the rest of your life (if I am not mistaken, I am still grounded).

A few good things happened that don't happen now...
MTV really played music videos. Concert tickets were $10. Big Macs really were BIG. Radio stations didn't burn out a song after 12 hours by playing it 2x/hour. AND we had vinyl...cd's are cool, but we had the rich sounds of vinyl albums. Remember Sizzlean, where's the beef, and GOOD sitcoms???!!
