When does ‘budget’ become ‘unlimited budget’ ?

So, having seemingly shrugged off their Panasonic clone cameras Leica are springing on us their own admittedly very lovely entry level compact camera the X1.

Looks cool as it abandons all the superfluous garbage we get afflicted with now on cameras and just takes great shots instead. DPreview feature it at the moment and while they predict the as yet unreleased pricing details to be heart stopping – you can just go on Amazon and preorder it yourself/stop your heart for $2000 or $2500 with a few nice accessories.

Whilst it doubtless will be a great compact camera and inevitably become the iPhone of the photography glitterati – can it really be that good to justify a price that’s deep into semi pro DLSR country? Is having the little red sticker on your camera really worth such a premium. Time will tell I guess and if I had sufficient disposable income not to bat an eyelid at such purchases I probably wouldn’t think twice about it. But most of us don’t so I’m curious how a manufacturer could ever conceive of something like this as an accessible and budget level entry into their product range.

Over $2000?! Yikes!! I would get a DLSR and lenses instead for that price.

The work of art may have a moral effect, but to demand moral purpose from an artist is to make him ruin his work. (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - 1832)

What is more baffling is that they are introducing that pricey camera in these economical times. They sure must believe in themselves and are banking on the Leica name!

*restarts heart* :o)

Clearly the intended audience for this is a shopper I ran across today.

She left a review of cute little rolling desk/workstation that she bought for her kid. Apparently the $450.00 pricetag didn't feel like an oxymoron with tagging herself as a "budget shopper".

I admit it took me a few minutes to stop laughing like a looney toon.

In fairness, it is hardly a budget P&S spec. The sensor is ASPC format and the lens is straight from their M range. However, it is 4 times the cost of a Sigma DP2, but with a much higher sensor resolution. Its more like an old classic film camera made digital. (Some of us are old enough to remember such things). Does it have a market? Well, not everyone likes to lug around a DSLR all the time and yet still want DSLR picture quality.

I confess, having just seen the test image examples on dpreview.com - they are quite astonishing for a compact - slightly on the soft side but that's a good thing (no heavy handed in camera processing) but detail levels are excellent.

makes me want to kick my crappy canon powershot around the floor. a lot.
