Main Galleries discrepancies

Am I being unreasonable to be dissappointed that these images are archived ?
I would also be sincerely grateful for any critical comments regarding their quality/faults/failures

I am not claiming or complaining that these photos SHOULD be promoted but that there are many others from many members that deserve promotion more than family photos and c-i's of 10.

I know it is petty to complain about archived images - but I do find it very discouraging when I see images with C-indexes of 10 in the Main Galleries while higher scoring New Images are passed over. Knowing I will likely invoke criticism for using my own images as examples nevertheless I do because I can not see the archived images of other members. I selected them at random.

I have taken into account that the VB is not a reliable indicator of quality, and that the AC is being tested, but it makes no sense to me that if the Voting Booth has any credibilty at all, that 10's are acceptable as Main Gallery Showcase images. None of the ones linked to were nominated for AC consideration which I also realise is a factor.

EDITED 14/09/10: I have removed the links I posted, as they are no longer relevant as examples now that the Main Gallery's' recent promotions no longer contain the less suitable images :)

Lyn - Your question is certainly valid. The criteria for the Main Gallery is nebulous and certainly mysterious. As an AC member, I open the main gallery to review works in the criteria for that being considered prior to voting, to compare quality, then assess the work on its own merit. This is done is an effort to maintain the high level of quality being desired for the Main Gallery. I agree that there are works in the main gallery that are questionable, yet others are pulled or not 'allowed' in that are of superior quality in my opinion. There are several of mine that were placed in the Main Gallery, only to be pulled. Also agreed, is that the VB is not a reliable determinant; I wonder if numbers of downloads is more reliable in some ways. As you do, I would appreciate feedback regarding quality/faults of my works that were initially placed in the main gallery then removed. This will help me better understand the criteria and process as well help me as a photographer. Thad

Of course only images that are put forward can considered by the AC. I have several pictures that I want to put forward, but limited opportunities to do so. There are quite a few dramatic landscapes in the main gallery, and it has always been the case, even before the AC, that in such circumstances only some of the best images got through. Sunsets and sunrises are the same. I agree with the sentiment that not all of what gets through should, and that there are images that are not put through.

I would also put out that Three is very out of date, well over 30 days old, and that no one can see it unless they go through your galleries, since the New gallery is now culled at 30 days. I would also say that the Mods are still adding pictures as well.

I really do not see that the age of the images has any bearing. All I am pointing out is that there are better images available for consideration by the Imnage Mods to promote the site than some (a small number)of those that are currently doing so. I am not saying these ones of mine should have been nominated for the AC to vote on, or promoted by the image mods. I simply used them as examples that are available to me. I could of course give links to the ones I feel are poorly representing the site but that is not something I would ever do. Anyone who cares to browse through the first 20 or so pages (by date)will see them for themselves. The first 20 or so pages are what most visitors look at. I have had a recent experience where I recommended this site to an acquaintance - a photographer, and his opinion after browsing a few pages of the Main Galleries was not very good, due to the snapshots etc. Had he perused them by C-index he would have seen a diffierent picture, but first impressions count.

I do understand that only images that are nominated can be considered by the Arts Council - that is not the point I was trying to make. Good images are being overlooked by the Image Mods while at the same time poor images remain and apparently recently promoted AC nominations are being removed.

A look through the first 20 Main Gallery pages by date today shows that the 'poor representations' of the site are no longer there - Thanks Image Mods !!

No more 10's and no more family snaps - a much better look. :)
