Once I read that you don't recommend people or pets in the photos (wallpapers) because nobody would like to have strange people or pets on their desktops. But I see many pets and people and those photos are highly ranked. So, how do you rank the posts? According to the quality of the photo, the beauty, the artists? And how many people are ranking the posts, do they have different criteria? My best regards. Milka
"how many people are ranking the posts" As many as choose to vote in the voting booth. Each image gets voted on by 10 to 30 voters. (I am not sure why some are voted on more than others. It is a Caedes thing.)
"do they have different criteria?" Yes. Each person chooses their own criteria. Each makes up their own mind how to vote.
"So, how do you rank the posts?" "According to the quality of the photo" yes "the beauty" yes "the artists?" Preferably not. Some possibly do.
Some factor in suitability for the desktop also.
Too many people post snapshots of pets and family so it is discouraged in general. An artistic well made photo of a person or pet still gets rated well because it is a quality work of art. We even have a people gallery and a pets gallery for the best ones.

Thanks a lot, David for your answer. But I am also interested in other things.
Who decides about the votes for CI, the c-index for the image? Is it by voting, too? And why does it go up and down all the time? Why the numbers of the voters and the CI "referee" are so different? Thanks a lot. Milka
Yes the CI is the result of the votes placed on the image in the voting booth. The CI is the result of the current votes combined with some averaging based on each voters habits. The CI goes up and down as additional votes are factored in. It can be very confusing and sometimes frustrating if you watch it too closely or put too much value on it. Just ignore it until you have 10-15 votes or so. It starts to stabilize after that.
The following is a general run down of the C-index. Feel free to keep asking questions until all is clear. :)
????????? The C-Index is Not a score card. The C-Index is a generalization of the opinions of people you probably do not know.
Does the C-Index dictate placement of images in the Main Gallery? No.
Does the C-Index accurately indicate the artistic value of an image? Not always.
Do the best images get the highest votes? Usually but Not always.
Do the worst images get the lowest votes? Not always. Sometimes the audience simply fails to appreciate the artistic nature of the piece.
Should I invest my self worth in my C-Index score? Absolutely NOT!
What is the purpose of the C-Index? To give the artist a "generalized" indication of the "success" of an image. Not its artistic merit or technical quality. (This may not have been the intended purpose, but it is what it is in my opinion.)
Why does the C-Index change drastically from day to day? Voting continues and the numbers add up ( or down ). Ignore the C-Index until you have at least (12?) or more votes. It is very unstable until then.
How the voting gets converted into the C-index.
quote from Caedes From when the voting booth was new still new : 12/13/05
"… 3.The votes are currently weighted, but instead of picking some outside metric I weight them based on the historical accuracy of the voters' votes (how close they were to the average vote for each image they have voted on). We also do this based on the genre, so people who are not good at voting on fractals don't have their vote counted highly. (when voting on fractals)
4. Even though everyone has a different 'average' that they assign to images, this is not a problem. I can easily enough calculate the average for each voter and use that to make each voter's average the same, so they are all speaking the same language." ?????
Assuming the above has not changed significantly in the past five years: If I vote 4 through 7 all the time my 4=0 and my 7=10. Thus the c-index calculates my votes differently than someone who votes 0 though 10. Voters who vote all 10 or all 0 are probably dropped completely. Thus the actual votes and the value of those votes are not the same. That is why what you see is NOT what you get. In times past the c-index was made invisible to alleviate all the anxiety and miss understanding it creates. Individual votes were also made invisible for the same reason. Now we have opened up that can of worms once more by popular demand.

Wow! Thank you very much for all your explanations and sorry if I troubled you by that. I am not worried about the votes and the voters, but I was just curious. I love shooting photos and posting them, and that's the most important for me. I love this site and nothing (votes, c-index) could make me leave it. LOL Again, thanks a lot. Have a great time. Milka

Celso - Youve only been a member for one day, and already you ask tough questions. Welcome to CAEDES. Celso you have asked a tough question, are you ready for a tough answer? Resolution is easy to get. Just open your work in Photoshop and set you resolution to 300 and save the work under a new name. Its just that easy. But if you follow my advise you will notice that your work still looks awful. How come? because resolution does not mean good quality. are you trying for good quality or are you just copying a photo and thinking that adding resolution will improve the quality. It does not work that way. You have to start with quality, set your settings to save for high quality, and Vola! you have high quality. Mankind has tried for centuries to turn Dung into Gold. Mankind hasnt done it yet. The real trick is to keep trying, the more you try the more you learn. Good Luck Moose
@ Moose... what has one days membership have anything to do with whether the question is tough or not??
@ Celso.. I use apophysis all the time I render with quality set at 1000 Filter radius 0.4 oversample 2.. I usually render width 1600 height 1200.. After I've rendered the image, I make a copy and open it in a program like photofiltre (free) or photoshop (which ever you have available to see if there is any grain.. to change the colours, or adjust the lighting and contrast..
I find this is pretty good and I've printed out work many times to sell.. depends also on the quality of your printer and paper.. oh and ALWAYS save your work.. and ALWAYS make a copy that you can mess around with adjustments that way you have your original image safe
Hi Celso, I do Apophysis too, though I haven't posted here in a while. When I render my settings are set as Quality 3500, Filter radius 0.4 & oversample 2. I also set my render size at 3200.
Then after it's cooked, lol...I make a copy, just like Jackie & npop it in Photofiltre & to fix up the grain or the colors.
I have PF & Photoshop both too. I'm beginning to feel like Jacqueline's clone. :oD
I've found that rendering really larege & then re-sizing your "down"...making it smaller or almost half it's size, really takes care of the grain but it take HOURS to render.
Can you elaborate some more on what exactly is occurring (any error messages?), or what it is that you are doing (downloading then, setting image as desktop.. or, as Samatar has mentioned above)?
Couple of things to check.
File type of image.
For example, with Windows XP ... cannot set a .PNG file as a desktop background.
==Samatar Thank you for your answer, however, I didn't just fall off the windows computer. I have been a been a patron of your site for a while now so I think I know "how to set a background". What I was saying is that I was wondering if others were having the same problem in setting a background like I am.
Jaegest - if I understand correctly, you are wondering if others are having problems setting pictures as backgrounds? The answer is NO! You said that you didnt fall off the windows computer, so I am assuming you use a recent version of windows. To save a photo as a background, I usually download the picture, save it to a file and then right click on it to save as a desktop background. Your browser or virus protection may be the culprit preventing you from doing this. Try and turn off the virus protection and see if that makes a difference. Then turn it back on of course. Good Luck.
When I choose wallpaper for my monitor I mentally ask the question, do I really want to look at this for several days. If the answer is no, I find something else. This eliminates ones that are boring and ones that may be great but are somehow disturbing. I think its purpose should be to enhance my workday.
