C-index Issues

Lately over the past 3 weeks I have experienced problems with the ratings of my images. After I upload an image it will have a C-index rating within 1 to 5 hours. It used to be around a 24 hour period before a C-index rating would appear. I have spoken to several of the Mod's concerning this and Caedes, but I guess the general thinking was it was temporary. Who should I speak to to get this issue resolved. I've had images that have had C-index's as low as 40 within a 1 hour period after upload. Can someone please help me out with this. I'd really appreciate it.

Thank You,
Xwild

C-indexes are not really important and people shouldn't get all worked up, it isn't a competition. The c-index takes several days for it to stabilize, wait at least four days before taking the c-index at face value. If you are getting a c-index showing up after only a couple of hours, then that means more members are voting and viewing your images shortly after you upload them then when you first started uploading here at caedes.net.

The work of art may have a moral effect, but to demand moral purpose from an artist is to make him ruin his work. (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - 1832)

OK, about the c-index issue. The problem is that we do take it seriously. It's the only way for us to get an honest democratice indiction of how good our stuff really is. This is one of the reasons we post here on caedes. The comments are helpful, but since they're rarely entirely honest ("You need to stop postinig because your stuff is completely amateurish." etc.) we have to go on the c-index.

Given the high traffic on the website now I no longer add things to my favorites unless they are absolutely perfect. Since this is the case for me, I suspect it's the case for others as well, so maybe we can remove the favorites from the calculation of c-index. I just don't think it's appropriate anymore. Long ago my faves got to a point where I never looked at them anymore, because there were so many, so I stopped adding to them. If this is the case, and people aren't adding to their faves, should it be part of the calculation?

By the way, am I unusual in not using the faves anymore?

Thanks Allot I appreciate the input. I basically use the C-index rating to know if a certain theme works or not. The only reason why I brought up the issue was because, the time frame for a C-index rating to occur has changed from what it was a month ago. I thought maybe it was a glich and if it was, maybe someone should know about it. It's not a big issue to me, and I certainly didn't mean to sound as if I were blaming anyone. Thanks allot Piner for letting me know what has been happening. I'm totally cool with it and thanks for your reply.

From observation I'd say that the c-index updates every 25 or 26 hours rather than every 24 hours, i.e. it gets a little later every day. If your images are uploaded at roughly the same time of day there'll come a day when the index will suddenly be calculated a lot sooner after upload, as you say. It'll gradually get later again as the cycle continues.

The sooner after upload the index is calculated the less "reliable" it's going to be. Perhaps Caedes thinking on this is that by varying the time of day, the less reliable c-indexes won't just happen to people in one particular time-zone.

Hope this makes sense and helps,

Simon

I believe the explination is that the timer is set after the server has calculated all of the cindexes rather than immediately reset. In other words the time is set for 24hrs, after 24hrs, the server starts to calculate c-indexes, this takes the server a while, then when the server is finished the timer is reset counting the next 24hrs, making the total time 24hrs+time for the server to calculate c-indexes. This would explain why it pushes further and further. But then again I'm just postulating and could be completely wrong.

You are almost correct. In fact it does have to do with a time delay, but I don't think it is anyway near an hour long. When someone votes the server also checks to see if the c-index has been updated in the last 24 hours. If not, then it runs the update (which takes maybe a few seconds). So the requirement is that the c-index is updated no more than once per 24 hour period.
