I was going to buy my daughter a Canon S95. She said it would be too much like her current point and shoot. She has 4 young children and wants to be able to take pictures at baseball games, swim meets, etc. My camera guy suggested this Sony NEX 5 might be good. Has anyone heard about it? Also, I could get her an SLR because I have lenses she could have. I've thought about the T3 can it shoot a burst? Thanks.

Hi Jen: I dont have a Sony NEX5 but I do have an opinion. It was easy to google up the reviews on the Sony camera. I read each line of text twice. I was looking for a specific comment, and I found it. "The Focus". Sony makes good stuff, the problem I have with them is that all their stuff is brand specific for repairs. What this means is that you cannot use standard parts on a sony product. It has to be a sony part. Usually their parts are 1/10 of a volt difference. Sony always had a problem with their focus. It does not like to work well in low light. The reviews I read speak of sonys great manual focus option, but made no mention of their old problem. So until Sony redesigns the focus hardware, the original problem remains,
The other problem I have with this is the limited number of lens available. If your daughter is going to be shooting in a gym, I would feel much better recommending something like the Panasonic Lumix DMC LX5 because it has a flash shoe mounted on the camera. I have one and it works great with my canon flash or my Metz digital wireless slave flash. I would think with 4 kids, a mom like her would enjoy the benefits of a P&S that slips into her pocket but has all the bells and whistles of a DSLR. Also I am disappointed in Sony because once again the new model NEX5 is identical to a NEX3 except for the material the camera body is made of. Not my idea of a new model. I would think you issue a new model when you have made improvements in operations, quality, or a lower price. You know your daughter better than anyone else, so what ever you get her, make sure it is something she will use effortlessly. My rant is over, my opinion has been spread, you may now resume your normal activity. Thanks for listening..Moose
