I assumed this would be about the Canadian or US flag and was planning to echo your thoughts on the general topic (ie who cares)
It is fairly uninspiring and yes, if we became a republic (another fairly pointless symbolic change) it wouldn't make much sense to retain the union jack, but then I just think of how impossible it would be to get everyone to agree on a single new design.
All pretty petty in the scheme of things. I think the main problem people had when there was a referendum for the republic thing was that we might be excluded from the commonwealth games... :-P
Same controversy happens in NZ Quote from this site http://www.nzflag.com/ "What is the point of having a flag so similar to Australia's that many people can't tell them apart? . . . . . . . . We need something distinctive and as emblematic as the Canadians' flag."
Who cares? Plenty I would imagine. Patriotism is not a bad thing - neither is individuality. The only real difference between Oz and NZ flags is the difference in the stars of the Southern Cross.
The NZ flag was first used in 1869 and became the official national one in 1902 - which I believe was a year or so before Australia's was approved, although theirs was unofficial from 1788. Both have a lot of history.
There is a (mainly) healthy trans Tasman rivalry between the two countries - it may indeed be nice if we had more distinctive flags :) One of the things we do appreciate each other for is being a handy holiday destination.:)
Even Politicians get in on the 'healthy rivalry' act During the 1980s, Robert Muldoon the PM of the time was asked about the increasing number of New Zealanders leaving the country to work in Australia. His comment was that by doing so, they were raising the average IQ of both countries.
No comment on whether I agree :) I have been married to a half aussie for over 40 years so I guess some of us can get along, most of the time - flags nothwithstanding.
My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . .
