As I'm currently trying to figure out what to do with my life, it struck me that I have no idea about what many frequent Caedes members do for a living. Due to all the beautiful things on this site, it's easy to assume that some of you at least are in the creative industries :)

Also, has anyone found any ingenious ways to get through life, the bills etc. creatively? I'm currently starting up a business selling prints and designing shirts - has anyone has success with anything like this?

Love to all, hope the weather is better wherever you are - clouds of doom here!

We as artists look upon the world in many different languages. There are those of us who see sadness, pain, suffering. But if we do not occasionally look and see that there is love and laughter, what's the point of looking at all?

Dear Gemma: If you are currently trying to figure out what to do with your life, then please take a number and wait in line. Your current number is 23,000,459,832,002. Please be patient because the wait may be slightly long, due to the lack of qualified counselors. If you would like an unqualified opinion, I can present one for you with no waiting.

I think it is more important to understand what brings joy to your life, than to ponder what to do in life. Most people just chase the money and live a life of unfulfilled misery. If you are lucky enough to discover what brings you joy, you need to embrace it and it will present you with a guide for creating a minimum lifestyle. I said minimum because you need to provide real passion and effort and interest to elevate to a more fruitful lifestyle. Real wealth comes from ideas plus energy. As you age and grow in wisdom and skill, your interest may wander on to something else. It really is surprising when that happens, because it was not planned for. Please remember that Change is the law of life. If you look only to the past or the present, you are certain to miss the future.

Mohandas Gandhi, this famous simple man from India, once wrote, "that to know the difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would be enough to solve most of the worlds problems." What an ingenious way to get thru life. Then there is a dead guy who lived in a time when there wa no TV, Internet or even indoor bathrooms. His name was Simon Bolivar. His philosophy on life is so on the money. He said "Judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement. Then some smart azzed artist wrote "wisdom comes from doing both. To grow in wisdom, you gotta try. Try many things". Thats smart azzed guy was me. You asked if there is an ingenious way to get thru life? Sure, . . . use underhanded tactics like self esteem, positive energy and a smile. These will get you thru most of life's battles.

You asked if anyone has had any success with a business venture in selling prints and or designing shirts. NOPE! I tried it. I sucked at it or people thought my work sucked. One way or the other, it did not put food on the table.

You also assumed that some people here are in the creative industries. Hmmm. . . .could be, but there is not much money or room for slow or starter talent in creative work. Thats why there is interest in a site like CAEDES for us creative hobbyists.
All this psyco babble was presented to you, with the sincerest intent of providing you with some starting point, for your journey in life. I did not answer your questions directly, because any attempt to do so would only present my arrogance and ignorance. Life is wonderful, go out and try, try and try again. When you become rich and famous. I would hope you may consider, renting me as a friend.
Sincerely Moose

Gem, my particular job (which is in the creative industry), leaves me little to no time or inclination to do the kind of artwork I'd like to do in my free time. That and having children and a husband to harass and make sure they've gotten their daily dose.

Most artists who make a career in the arts do something day in and day out and generally creating art that they either hate (but it fulfills the function it's designed to do), or the art needed is not very inspiring, and therefore, rarely really care about it what they're putting out. Then they go home to let their minds stretch and do something awesome on their own time. I've been as dedicated about what I do at home, but there are many artists who are.

In my particular job, I design kids' furniture, primarily working with licensors, which means that I take their artwork, and choose how to apply it to the furniture I design or am given to work with (which is why I was listening to a kids' cartoon the other day - I'm designing something that I need sound clips from the cartoon for). However, I don't have free reign, they have to approve everything that I'm doing, so I send them comp images as the first stage of the concept process, and then they'll comment back, telling me if there's something they don't like about what I've done. When I say I have to take professional criticism all the time, this is what I'm referring to. Sometimes I disagree with their changes, and that becomes another discussion. It's a tricky balance how much you argue back. Some stuff you just have to let go of no matter how you disagree because ultimately - it's their brand, and they have the right to dictate what gets done with it.

From there, the art is prepped and sent to the factory to make samples, and then I comment on the samples. Again, sometimes I have to let stuff go here because there's a production order that needs to be met, or because it's not worth nitpicking over, when worth is defined as "possibility of actually getting what I want". I'm also responsible for eyeballing the packaging that is done and making sure that I am good with how the product is displayed, and approving photography of the items that I design.

This is a job that I actually fell into. The company I'm working for used to be my clients when I was working for a catalog house producing catalogs. They had my number when I left that job, and they called me when they started their own in-house art dept. I apprenticed my way up to where I am now, which is being in charge of my own lines. Previously I worked under someone else executing their designs and developing my knowledge of price points (how much it was going to cost to make what I was designing), technical capabilities, and licensor relationships.

Thanks for these replies - I can see truth in all of them!

As of yet no income from the prints which I'm not too surprised about, but for now it is literally all I can do - I still have two years of university left, and have been diagnosed with fibro this year which means I don't have the energy to get any other job at all. It's fine while I'm still getting my student loan, but I need to start thinking about the future as I'm not sure what I'll be able to manage - dreams of becoming a professor are long gone now, as to do that I'd need to be able to get more degrees which I'd need to fund myself this time, and be able to travel round the world with exhibitions. Luckily I've got over those dreams a bit more now.

How about freelance work? My only concern money wise is to keep a roof over my head and food on the table - will freelancing actually achieve this? I imagine it just depends on how good you are (a.k.a. skill AND putting yourself out there).

I'm not sure if I can design for trends... I swear if I see another variation on KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON I'm going to scream and possibly do some other crazy stuff, involving jet skis and several giraffe.

Gem - freelance work, here's my advice if you're actually going to be able to make a living at it:

1) Register *only* with agencies that ask no fee of you the freelancer. These agencies receive fees from the businesses, and are likely to have a wider network of businesses to send you out to, AND you will be more likely to get placements, and be able to build a reputation, because these kinds of agencies are only interested in sending out talent that makes the company happy.

2) Register with several agencies. Find your balance, but staying with only one agency means that if they don't have anything for you right then, you're SOL. Don't agree to be exclusive for any agency unless you're getting enough volume of work from them to make it worthwhile.

3) Be on top of your portfolio. You want that sucker to shine TALENTED! GOOD ASSET!

4) Sometimes you have to separate in your head that urge to scream. Or vent about it to a co-worker or peeps here or IRL. However - you've got a goldmine opportunity there. It's just a question of taking the step to make it a viable profitable move. If you think *you're* ready to scream, how many people do you think have hit that saturation point already as well? So take that and use it. Put out your own message, bring it to the table of a company who wants a line of new catchy stuff. "Screw that! I'm going to Scream and Run Away."

One of the best shirts I've ever seen was post-Titanic Movie, probably about 4 months after the release. Message: "It sank. Get over it." I died laughing. I'd have bought the shirt if I'd seen it in a store.

P.S. Put a design for that anti-trend message in your portfolio. But only do one. You want to advertise yourself, you don't want to give your ideas away for somebody else to develop without you getting paid for it yourself.

Brilliant advice. I'm going to get on my portfolio again as soon as possible, haven't updated it for two years and that was tending towards fine arts so it needs going over desperately!

Thank you so very much for that Cat, and that's brilliant advice for a lot of people and all - sort of stuff they don't actually teach you at uni but needs to be known! x
