The author says if you were friends with him in real life and asked him how to take a soft flower picture, he would tell you without subjecting you to a long boring lecture! This is how the books are meant to work.
I decided to read the first part before buying the rest, and have been enjoying it so far -- I even like the quirky humour! From what I read, he sometimes suggests three pieces of photographic gear... one budget, one mid-range, one costly. He doesn't make money from it -- these are what he would suggest informally to his friends. I'm not sure all the items are available in the UK, but that's not a deal-breaker... there are still nice tripods to be had here. :-)
