Physics+ 3d Rendering

Ok. I'm hoping that there are some physics buffs out there who know a thing or two about the cosmic strings and 3d rendering. I'm doing my science fair/ independent research project this year on the cosmic strings and i need/ would like to be able to create a 3D model representing the formation and interaction of the strings. If you have any suggestions on software (preferrably free-ware) that'd be wicked awesome.

From my exposure to the subject of string theory and cosmic strings in particular I have the distinct impression and opinion that the subject does not really qualify as science in a strict sense. Granted, it has science type stuff in it and attempts to explain the nature of the universe, however since nothing that the theory predicts can be tested (and probably won't be for a very long time) most scientists would agree that it only qualifies as a hypothesis (not science). In other words it fails the falsifiability test like many other hypotheses (many religious world views for instance). So I'm just warning you that it might not get a great review just from that perspective depending on the judges.

As for modeling the strings: from my understanding the physical interpretation of the string is just a tool to understand how it behaves, so there is questionable relevance to any actual physical manifestation. Most explanations suggest that a string is like a closed loop of ribbon. Its combination of vibrational modes is what determines what type of entity it is. So I'd render a simple loop of ribbon and animate it to vibrate in different ways.

Well I mean you can model the string network of the "universe" and the interactions but i agree with what you're saying. It's just so darn abstract.

If you want free 3D you could use Moray - http://www.stmuc.com/moray/
That's what I use.

Never give up. Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it. ~~ Michael Jordan
