Discussion Forum Search

I was trying to make a cadre suggestion without creating a new thread or spending all night searching for an older one. It seems that the Discussion Forum Search is still offline. I do recall at some point in the past (shortly after the formation of the planets) that it was being worked on to improve speed, but I have a hard time believing that it has been the top priority for this many millenia (skeptic I may be). How is that coming along?

It was taken offline because it wasn't working correctly and I didn't have the time to work on it (technically I still don't). It seems that search is not at all easy to do correctly. By shear coicidence I was working on it earilier today though. I only have one major hurdle to get over before I can bring it back online. When I do there will be an announcement of some kind.

I worked through the problems and now have something that seems to work. You should be able to access and test the discussion board search in a few minutes (I'm updating the search database right now).

That is going to help a great deal. I found it much easier to navigate as well. Thank you!

Very nice search feature. Glad to see it running again. One thing that was present in the old one that I miss now was the ability to search by either comment content or comment author. It allowed me in particular to find comments that I made but forgot to subscribe to. Also, it seems to only search the forums now whereas before it also searched the image discussions. Is this intentional? If so, could there be an option to select whether to include image discussions in the search results?

Great work, one of these days I'm going to learn something about programming search engines but in the mean-time I'm very impressed.

I decided to remove the username search feature because there is not a clear way for such a feature to work. With the old version, the search was looking through and returning each individual comment that matched the query, however this version merges together all the comments that are on a particular page (like google does it). So you end up with pages which have many different user's comment on each.

So in other words it would have to parse out all the comment authors from each forum and then check that list for the comment author in the search string. I can see how that would be a whole 'nother can of worms. I can live without that feature :). Any thoughts on the ability to search image discussions, news and profiles?
