A book I've been reading made a point about one of the key differences between a website and a physical space you might explore in the real world such as a store or a museum.
The difference I’m referring to is that with a website you have no sense of scale. If you’ve been to 10 pages on some website, do you have any idea how big that site is? Are there 100 other pages? 1,000 other pages? If you’re exploring a mall or a zoo or something, you always have some idea of how much of it you’ve seen.
It got me to thinking… How big is Caedes? This site has such an intimate feel that I have always thought of it as feeling like it consists of 100-200 total pages. Of course in reality there are many more pages here. But how many? Think about this:
Total images – 16,837 at press time. Every image appears in two galleries, one category, and one user gallery, plus each image has its own discussion page. [((16,837 / 36) * 2) + 16,837 = approx. 17,772 web pages].
Total active users – 6,149 at press time. Each user has a profile page and a favorites gallery (I’ll just assume one page average favorites gallery size). [6,149 * 2 = 12,298 web pages].
Discussion board threads – approx. [3,000 web pages].
Miscellaneous other features – approx. [200 web pages].
Total = More than 33,000 web pages
I’ve used generous assumptions for galleries, i.e. 36 images per page rather than 8 per page, and not considering the enormous number of gallery pages that even though they are sorted at 36 per page probably only have 1-10 images (user galleries in particular). I also disregarded all the full screen image display pages (about 5 per image, that’s a lot of pages). I’m counting the voting booth for one page even though it is different every time you view it. So in reality, Caedes is a lot larger than even this estimate, and some of those web pages (i.e. user profiles, forum discussions, even image discussions) are the equivalent of many many web pages in one.
Well, since Caedes is a dynamically scripted, database-driven site, it's as big or small as you want it to be (it doesn't really have 'x' number of pages as such). Think of it as a small portable space that travels around with you - you'll never see how big it is because it's only as big as what you see.
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
I realize that Matthew, but I was referring to the notion of everything that Caedes has to offer content-wise, not the number of unique files on a server somewhere. This site is just a great example of "if you build it, they will come". It's a good thing Geri designed this site to be automated. Where would we be without databases :)
Yes .. It IS true .. I've got debbie's phone number .. and ... no ... she doesn't want to meet your brother .. and why would she, I give her all that she needs
I'm glad I read this discussion since the title didn't exactly make it clear what it was about. I think a caedes.net Zeitgeist would be preety fun to make. We can come up with all kinds of crazy facts and statistics.
I've got an idea for a crazy statistic to be researched.....how often & how weirdly a thread goes off course.....And how quickly And whether the addition of certain individuals who shall remain nameless contributes meaningfully to said threads insanity.....
well .. let's keep things in perspective ... Elves, goblins, or munchkins are not doing the research ... do you know what a 5 pound bag of Munchkin Chow costs?
It will likely be a heavily modified Bayesian text filter (*keith's head begins to swell as he pretends to know what he's talking about*) .. so heavily modified, in fact, that it'll become a Caedesian Text Filter (*keith's nose begins to grow as he continues to fool only himself*) ... this script will swim through the database, like a shark, havesting factoids (*keith's shirt becomes tight .. his pants seams begin to rip*) ... and leave them piled up in the morning when *caedes has finished his cheerios and has expended the allotment of playstation2 time his mom allows (*with rivets popping and buttons flying, green skin expanding .. keith becomes the .. incredible bulk*)
Maybe if we bought a lot of Munchkin Chow we could get a rice break ... I'll check
"Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many."- "I wish the Ring had never come to me.
I wish none of this had happened..." "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."-Gandalf
Hmm, that comment seems out place for the 'season.' Where is the love?
However ... now my curiosity is peaked. Exactly how does the Incredible Bulk get worked up anyhew? Is he green? Can he parallel park? Enquiring minds want to know.
So pleased you lot are cleaning him up.. its usually me that has to do it.. *sits back feet up with iced drink and watches... Oi.. you missed a piece over there...
Separate those hearty women that don't run away at first sight, and can handle a little bug by their lonesome without cowering in fear in a closet till 'daddy' gets home, from the high maintenance three cans of Raids type kind of women.
Those ... those women are trouble, let me tell ya.
If the Caedes site wasn't so restrictive with avatar size more could be done with animation .. I originally made "blinky" to a slower beat .. but had to hack it back to two frames .. thus, we have the Double Mocha Latte (hold the Mocha \ Hold the Latte) version ... or in certain parts of town .. known simply as the crystal-meth version
with a generous size of, say, 16 megs, I could do a "black light" version .. posters on the wall .. a little Barry White on the stereo ...
(The "black light" version, that is, and yes, bumping up the file size to a lesser extent. To be clear. Another trait of those 'archers;' clarity of thought and dissertation. Oh, and that they like to have their bellys tickled.)
I had a really awesome avatar that once I got it down to the reg kb size, lost all it's cool animation, 16 megs would be terrific. Oh, that clarity of thought thing is great, 'cept I'm in no way a lateral thinker, you might have guessed
The icon creator I used to have allowed you to dictate how long each frame "Lasted" without having to add extra frames of the same image (at least that's as recall it, haven't used Microangelo for years now).
Yeah .. I have microangelo .. not sure of the version at the moment .. It seemed to be limited to 32x32 or 48x48 .. and yes .. I used to make "busy pointers" with the "jiffies" (1/60th of a second or whatever it was)
I tried to figure it out with "image ready" (comes with photoshop) .. and couldn't make heads or tails of it .. I did use it to optimize my GIFs though
so .. I ended up using a wizard with GIF Construction Set
... leading to a life of bitter disappointment and trials and tribulations with authority figures, culminating in the little boy's demise where in an Unreal Tournament against a formidable opponent named 'sLaUGhteR,' he comes face to face with his nemesis ...
"Remember me, Caedes? ... well, bring it on ... this time I am wiser and ready ..."
I got to start cutting out the caffeine after 9 p.m., maybe 8.
Lol. It never occurred to me that my avatar might be, hmm, distracting. I will let you in on a little secret ...
*whispers ... 'come closer' ...*
The reason, this icon and my other lovable alien was used, was to aid me in finding 'myself' on a page. There, my one and only secret is out ... if you don't count that summer camp incident ;) .
"The term "flapper", which became common slang in the 1920s, referred to a "new breed" of young women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered "decent" behavior. The typical flapper was unafraid to wear cosmetics or to be seen smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages in public."
... or ... according to American Standard:
"Disc-like rubber composite that retains water in the tank. Upon flushing cycle lifts to release water out of tank to the bowl for a complete flushing cycle."
Ok, back to my usual state of confusion. Nothing to see here, move along folks :) .
Ohh, you would shudder to know that my mom would use a pair of scissors ... not to cut ... but to 'pare' out the knots, almost strand by strand. But, 'Blue' would sit pretty and not make a fuss. That was the unbelievable part.
