For anyone who knows how to play i am starting a game of Mornington Crescent. Playing the standard rule set, allowing for house rules to be agreed upon once the game is in motion. As with other games played on here, feel free to play if you pick up the rules as the veterans play.
enough chit-chat....i'll keep things simple to start with.. Kings-Cross/Blackheath
Apologies, but you said standard rule set and our League rules don't include dual as standard. And it gets confusing for newcomers to the game, like you say. So...
right you are, maybe we can pick some 'house rules' like dual later on.. specially when there is more than just us playing... till then as standard as possible it is.
actually darryl i have found a few website where you can play it online in a forum based posting system like this and also ive found a version you can play online against a computer.. but the computer only has one set of rules.. you can't inclued your own variations and its very very hard to beat the computer, but its limited in the number of moves possible as it has a finite list and you must choose from it.

ahhh glad you could join us CaptainHero.. well Si and i decided to try and keep it simple for the start.. but when Si gets back if we all want to use it i dont see why not :D .. oh your not making a move on the bakerloo line are you??

Don't want to interrupt the game... although, you say you can figure out how to play by watching, but where do you come up with the street names (they sound like they are from London)? And what is the objective?
thats ok i dont mind thew interuption... however like samatar's game i can't give out the actual instructions on play, as that is intrinsically part of the game. but i can answer some of your questions.... the street names are in fact underground train stations within the city of london, although advanced rules of the game (which we aren't using in this game so far, see earlier posts on keeping it simple) allow travel beyond the bounds of london. Like most games the objective is to win and have as much fun in the process as possible. winning is by arrival at mornington crescent, but only by legal game moves. The game it's self is a definitively British thing, a humorous version of the game has been broadcasted on the radio, but unfortunately never on the tv for some reason. several books have been published on the game, most of which do assume a reader understanding of the basic rules, going on to explain advanced rules and detailing grandmasters of the game Official History and Rules of the Game of Mornington Crescent
.. hope ive informed you a little, in as much as i can!
Does it have sometinhg to do with rearranging the letters from the last location to form a new one? And how do I play if I don't know the names of any railway stations in London?
tube map this map is a bit big.. so you'll need to save it to desktop and zoom in a bit to get the names.
I think it might be hard to actually guess the rules, with only 3 of us here so far who know how to play.. but if the game goes on long enough and more people who do know join in, the more advanced rules will posssibly come into play at which point it may be easier for some people to spot the point of the game.

Well im not sweating it yet! the games not over till the crescent sings ;) besides defensive play can always set things up in the long run.. so... you obviously didnt check my early moves... i'll play through my Moorgate and London Bridge Bank/Monument capture :D
but its a little 2 sided.. wonder where 'Si' gone?
..unfortunately you not going to find a site that will explain... im not sure if it's a British thing.. but you can't be told how to play the game... not in it's basic form at any rate. here's a web site that gives a bit more background information.. and talks about the game..but not the rules..Crescent info . there is one key rule to the game.. if you can figure that one rule out you will pick up the rest almost instantly.

... your ceratinly a more agressive player than me...we used to play with a special 'travel-card' rule that removed the score multiplier for zones.. but that was only for quick verbal games ( much easier to track the winning moves that way) ... Block with direction change on Waterloo & City Green Park - Highbury & Islington

Sorry, I had a look at the map but I could only find about three of the stations mentioned in the game so far, let alone work out how you got to them...
Its ok Sam.. no-one else has got it yet either... i guess me and Matthew will just have to play the game out till one of us wins.. and then the post can slip into anonymity on the back pages of the offtopic board...direction change on Waterloo & City again!!...Victoria

Of course, as per the usual 'Waterloo & City' multiplier, that gives me a second move, so:
Bank - Chancery Lane
Ashley: If you want to surrender Holborn now, I will understand. I'm quite happy to waive the usual rule (attacker's privilege) and I'll allow you the 'rule of retreat' to, say...Lancaster Gate or even Hyde Park Corner if you want to play the Piccadilly Line. As you're new to the game, I don't want to complicate matters too much.
