If it is your 18th b'day tomorrow, are you still considered 17 legally? How can you mature so much over one day? My 15th b'day is in a couple weeks and I don't know how old I am, 14 or 15..

well i cant see how you can change it.. the day you were born is your birthday, even if you change the date, it will still be exactly the same, 2 weeks before your 15th you will still be 14.. my 15 yr old son does the same thing, he keeps saying he's 16 and he's not til April, so I keep saying to him NO YOUR NOT.. YOUR 15 ALMOST 16...

I think the answer to your original question, if you wanted one, is that the government has to draw the line somewhere. Of course in reality everyone matures at different rates and at different times; some people will never be able to handle alcohol or driving or relationships whatever, whether they are 16 or 60. But it simply isn't practical to give every person in the country some sort of test to determine whether they can handle these things (except driving I guess), so they just have to decide on an age. If you could say why not the day before your birthday, then why not a week before, or a month before, or two months etc etc. It's just a matter of drawing the line.

Remember though, 18 is also the adult age in most states for adult jail, adult contracts and more responsibility not just being able to buy cigarettes or other things.
