Fascinating, and rather disturbing. I did hear somewhere that some more wildlife is beginning to return to Chernobyl... wish I'd paid more attention now. Glad we don't have any nuclear reactors around here, although it's hard yo imagine anyone could ever stuff up as badly as the people in charge of that place did again...
I saw something on a news show (60 minutes?) about people moving back .. the old farmers that had nothing to go to have just migrated back over time ... muttering something about how the government is blowing the risk out of proportion
I get my potatoes from them for cheap .. I'll hook you up
I watched a documentary the other day about 3-mile-island nuclear accident and they covered Chernobyl a bit ... It amazes me how rustic the lifestyle is there .. horse drawn carts .. etc ... and everytime I've seen video or photos it's always that cold, lifeless pall that hangs over everything
in addition to potatoes I can get you your next fixer-upper .. a quick flip for you, I'm sure
The map above shows all our journey through the dead zone. Radiation went in soil and now in apples and mushrooms. It is not retained by asphalt, which makes rides through this area possible. I have never had problems with the dosimeter guys, who a while age were man the checkpoints. They are experts, and if they find radiation on you vehicle, they gave it a chemical shower. I don't count those couple of times when "experts" tried to invent an excuse to give me a shower, because those had a lot more to do with physical biology than biological physics
Thanks Keith, that’s a fascinating link that kept me occupied for ages. I think its amazing how much military gear is lying around the place. You could probably buy some cheap land there if you wanted it :-)
The photo of all the little shoes in the window sill of the kindergarten will take a while to leave my head. And the statue of Prometheus giving fire to the humans is very fitting. I poked around in that site for a while, felt like Charlton Heston in The Omega Man.
Oak Ridge is less than fifty miles from me, I've taken many photos of the tower against the sky and been carefully watched as well. Now it's simply a R&D lab if you can believe that sort of public relations announcement.
Ahh .. the wind in your hair, the bugs on your teeth, and something you can pass on to your kids ..
the portfolio of work, of course ... what were you thinking?
