Trouble uploading

Hello, can anybody tell me what you have to do to upload a picture?! I mean I've tried about 15 times to upload my first pic and didn't succeed, I always get the message that either image is too big or it is not fit to be a wallpaper or something like that. I have tried about 6 or 7 seizes, including 1600x1200 and when I upload it in that size it says it's too big and I should try 1600x1200. I'm really confused and sort of annoyed by this...
