Advice on selling prints, DeviantArt?

Hi all, I'm hoping for some advice from members who've "been there and done that". I've been idly thinking of having a go at selling some prints of my images and I've come up with a few different options:

- Print them myself and set up an ebay shop or something similar. Sounds like lots of hassle.
- Microstock (as in istockphoto)
- Sell prints through an existing site, e.g. DeviantArt Shop
- Create my own site (I'm a software engineer). Doesn't seem worth the setup time that I could spend creating saleable images if one of the other options is a good idea.

Have any caedes members got experience of the microstock/deviant art style image selling? Is it worth it? What are the pitfalls and potential problems?

I've used DA prints service to sell the caedes.net poster and calendar in the past. I was very impressed with the quality of the art print (photograph quality print and paper at poster sizes) and price. The calendar was acceptable quality. The reason I've not used them recently is their shipping prices seem too high (for the calendar).

As far as the DIY method goes. You need to do some research into the capital investment that would be needed to print the images yourself. My instinct tells me that this would not be feasible unless you have significant demand for your work already.

don't know much about the site, myself .. it was being discussed --> dslreports.com

there are numerous stock photo sites that put your work in front of advertising people .. but, generally, you make small money while the site makes out better

Don't expect to sell anything on deviant art unless you have a way of directing alot of traffic there somehow, either by advertising or word of mouth or whatever. There are simply too many images for sale on that site for anyone to notice you're around.
