Is it me, or what?

Simple question for now... Is it me, or does it seems that todays youth have very little work ethics? I'd say more, but at the moment my frustration levels are at a peak and if I could, I'd put "The Princess" and "The Tease" over my knee and give em the paddlings they perhaps needed when they were younger.

(*CB's question, having accumulated some speed since its posting, bounces off a savy Sam and flies over Keifer's head so closely that it trims the hair that wouldn't have needed cutting for a couple more years*) .. (*he recovers admirably and manages a... *)

Simple Question: Does todays youth seem to have very little work ethics? Or better yet... is a strong work ethic a thing of the past?

IMO there is very little to encourage work ethics these days, at least in this country. The days of company loyalty are gone because companies treat employees like disposable items, what with casual contracts etc. There is no reward for work ethics, quite the opposite in fact. In my days as an employee (which I hope are now behind me forever) I learned that it was much easier if you didn't take responsibility and just fobbed the customer off. Sounds terrible I know but it stopped them from asking why my call times were too long, why I wasn't churnin through more customers etc... places are run by statistics and the fact that you might have helped solve a big issue for a customer didn't matter. I knew I wouldn't work for them for long anyway (they ended up closing the whole place down and moving it to some third world country where the labour is much cheaper) so why should I bother... that was the attitude I took after five years of working for this kind of employer. Most people learn much faster I guess :-).

Corporate greed is the big thing now in the workplace. You are right Sam, the employee is a liability rather than an asset to any company. Add to the mix that today's youth that seem to have a sense of entitlement that I truly don't understand....., that combination is deadly! Yes I started working when I was 14 years old. My pay was $.0.90 cents per hour and I worked every evening after school from 4PM 'till 9PM and on Saturday and Sundays from 7AM to 3:30PM. Calling in sick was reserved for deadly illnesses, yet in return, we were treated well by the staff. We were given rewards for hours worked and certificates when we did something above and beyond our job description. We were told we were important and vital to the company (in this case a private hospital) and they treated us as if we were. Even throughout my work career, loyalty to our job was ranked first before anything else. In return, our perks were nice too. We were not questioned when we really were sick, we were given paid funeral leave for relatives and many times given comp meals when I was on call at the hospital. Our vacation packages were pretty as well. You won't see that today! Now you will see people being fired for accidentally leaving the workplace with a pen in their pocket in plain sight that they had no intention of stealing (the ink was almost gone). I know this because these are the people that my husband defends in the Labor disputes.
It scares me to think of what the work ethic will be when most of my grandchildren are working :(
Good off-topic Curt .........lot's of food for thought there!
