I just found this out myself and i imagine that there are a lot of you who didn(t know this either. But here it it. ; there exist a copyright protection on some buildings and any pis made from it :
- the Atomium
- Berlaymont
- all Nato buildings ( in Brussels )
- All buildings by Victor Horta
- The european parlement building
- AND the Eifel tower (but only at night because only the lighting is protected.)
From these i know they are protected , Do you know of any other ?
Exepsions are made for toursist if they are very prominent in the forground and in case of newsworthy events.
unfortunately no ; All use is prohibited according the the news article i read and various treads on the subject .( several belgium sites recived warnings and in some cases bills , and they were just amateur sites with no commercial ties )
I’m not even sure how many if any of these copyrights could be enforced at an international level and I suspect any attempts as such would be just sabre rattling as many of these buildings are civic owned and funded by taxpayers as opposed to private institutions. Military buildings such as NATO would be a whole different kettle of fish but for different reasons (national security hysteria).
I think i'll have my own house protected to , maby make a buck or to ;-)
Ofcourse this is Belgium so all things trivial become a big deal here while more serious things will have to wait for the next election :-)
if someone tried to sue me for taking a pic of the eifel tower i would argue that i was taking a picture of a bird near it.
or argue that you were in no way copying it. If you are shooting digital then argue that you created a bunch of 1s and 0s that when viewed as an image align to look something like the tower but in no way could 1s and 0s be the tower
and if you are shooting film it could be. Since when are light reflections on a peice of paper a tower.
I think we shouldn't pay attention to these ridiculous laws. except for business photos.
I see millions of tourists taking photos from the renewed Atomium and absolutely no cops to give fines...
Well I am going to Paris soon and I fully intend to get a pic of the Eiffel tower. If I dont come back you know I am imprisoned for breach of copyright.
How ridiculous. :)
Does anyone know what the copyright police look like so I can run if I see one ?
