I know it's been discussed in other discussions, but this issue continues to show itself over and over again. For example...I put up an abstract a few days ago. The starting c-index was 67. One vote brought that average down over 20 points and I'm seeing this kind of "hypervariability" based on one or two votes on numerous images here. Again, one person's vote is getting a tremendous amount of weight in the current rating system and has the ability to take an image from a relatively high quality standing to a relatively low standing. There's something wrong with that picture, IMHO...Wen
I think it may be because there are only around 11-13 votes on most images, so one single vote should have a fairly large effect on the c-index. I personally wouldn't call it hypervariability though - the c-index isn't that important.
personally, i'd rather the voter stop in and state their opinion(s) in words, as opposed to a number which tells nothing, and feels far too arbitrary and vague
ps- what's with the silly 'karma' factor? how much memory could be redirected to something more useful if this were eliminated?

Once upon a time, Karma was a numerical value much like that of todays C-index. One day the creator decided it was causing to much strife and it was reduced to "massive" and there were no longer any problems. Could it be that this often reoccuring over emphasized C-index may fall to the same outcome?
i'd agree wholeheartedly, mayne.
the point i made is simply this: i welcome judgement, criticism, etc. i just think a verbal form is more informative than a number. take one of my latest works, 'wooden flower'. i've had all sorts of kudos on it, but only got a 30...so the two don't correspond to one another.
if one IS to vote, i'd ask the voters to stop at the pic they just voted on, and perhaps explain, at greater detail, why they've voted a certain way...i've done that a few times myself, and not just for high scores

Interesting tweak of the usual barking up the tree. I'm happy to be in the low 30s and below range with most my pieces. I'm blessed with a taste (or aesthetic sense, or what you like to call it) that isn't compatible with the majority of people. I just couldn't care less. Be glad you have a quite good c-index for a little time some times at least. ^_^
"one person's vote is getting a tremendous amount of weight in the current rating system"
Tremendous? The weight is about 1/13, currently, and as the number of votes on each image increases, it will go down further. In the former rating system, where most of the images got around 6 or 8 votes, the weight of a single vote was much higher than now.
So if you are concerned with the weight of a single vote, you should encourage people to use the voting booth instead of bashing the system...
Just my 2c.
Yeah, I agree with Mia. Also the c-index is not based entirely on the votes - the exact formula has been mentioned in a couple old threads from last year (I don't know if the formula is the same now though) Yep, I know I have a habit of reading through old threads when bored =)
kjh i believe i'm on the same page here...but my opinion of comments instead of numerical voting stands..and i raise the motion for this thread to go wander among the elephants

Aye! I third that... ^_^ This should sleep with the fishes. I understand and agree at large with your point above Rob. I really wished that people would give more nuanced feedback more readily.
