AMD to Acquire Graphics Chip Maker ATI .. @ MSNBC

SAN FRANCISCO - Advanced Micro Devices Inc., said it will pay $5.4 billion to acquire top graphics chip maker ATI Technologies Inc., as Intel Corp.'s biggest rival in the market for personal-computer microprocessors attempts to expand its product portfolio.

Under terms approved unanimously by both companies' boards of directors, Sunnyvale-based AMD will pay $4.2 billion in cash and 57 million AMD shares to acquire all of ATI's outstanding stock, according to a news release.

MSNBC also wrote:
The deal also put competitive pressure on Nvidia Corp., the other dominant maker of graphics chips. Santa Clara-based Nvidia has competed against Intel in selling chipsets and graphics chips while counting on AMD for sales of those products.

If you own a PC, chances are roughly 50% that you have an ATI Radeon ..

If you don't have an ATI card then the remaining 50% are likely to be from nVidia ... there are, of course, Value-Added-Retailer (VAR) versions of these cards under different names

and .. last, but not least ... there are ON-BOARD graphics solutions built into motherboards by these folks as well

AMD is INTEL's rival in the CPU market

(who knows what is in a MAC? .. hampster technology?) ...

If you don't play computer games, you aren't likely to know what card or CPU you have .. ;o)

during its heyday 3dfx seemed like it would be around forever .. and then it was gone in a matter of a year or two ... I almost considered investing in it, but felt I had missed the mark ....

sure glad I felt that way

3dfx had some great concepts... My V5 5500 dual processor AGP does a great job...maybe not so with more modern game technology/hardware requirements...but utilizing it for older games AND graphic design applications is very good...3dfx also had a very well-ordained R & D team, being that after 3dfx's demise, many were recruited by ATI to make it what it has become...The 3dfx disaster came as a result of poor management, and a few very greedy CEOs...(Thanx guys)

I have an AMD 64 3000+ and run an nVIDIA 6800 OC XT. I love the AMD and the nVIDIA card and would hate to have to switch to ATI down the line.

Mac's are now running Intel chips...they finally sold their souls.
