I knew with all the snow we have had this winter, if I were patient---the elusive Snowbird would make an appearance. Sure enough, after the last storm, there he was on my back porch. I got in the stealth mode, slipped out the front door and crawled through six feet of snow to get this rare photo. It is a good thing I was prepared, because when my wife pulled into the driveway, the Snowbird disappeared. It might have followed her into the house or perhaps it returned to the Land of Oz or Kansas.

I was thinking of sending this to Anne Murray because I know she is enamored with them. I will get more shots of Snowbirds this spring when they return from Texas, Florida and other Southern States too numerous to mention. They are a different breed and look nothing like this beauty.

I believe that 'Snowbird' has a look of shock on it's face as it thinks that's a bloody big egg to lay!

There's-no bird like snow bird to get a real photographer all excited. It builds little igloos and hibernates after laying 2 to 3 eggs. The eggs are mostly stolen by foxes but they leave the hibernating bird alone because it is hard to bite on and tastes bad. Good one Tick.

You have to quit feeding this guy or he'll be nothing but Raptor Meat :-)

You did good, Tick. A++ for initiative alone. I haven't shot anything all Winter. Blue is disgusted with me.

OFT (Owd Fella Tick), This is what Anne Murray sung in her song, originating from the 1970's:

Beneath this snowy mantle cold and clean
The unborn grass lies waiting
For its coat to turn to green
The snowbird sings the song he always sings
And speaks to me of flowers
That will bloom again in spring

When I was young
My heart was young then, too
Anything that it would tell me
That's the thing that I would do
But now I feel such emptiness within
For the thing that I want most in life's
The thing that I can't win

Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would
Fly away with you

The breeze along the river seems to say
That he'll only break my heart again
Should I decide to stay
So, little snowbird
Take me with you when you go
To that land of gentle breezes
Where the peaceful waters flow

I hope that your snowbird has spoken as well about the flowers that will bloom again in spring.

Take care, stay safe and warm my friend.

Regards, Cornelius.

That's just the cutest thing...and I enjoyed your intro as well...a great shot and don't worry about Anne...I'll take care of that at my end agent SOT, unless she's flown the coop and down in warmer temps this time of year.

Poor thing looks Frozen Tick.

At first Glance I thought it was a Mile-A-Moww Bird.

You know the one that sticks it's head in the Snow Whistles through it's Butt and you can here him for a Mile-A-Moww.

Nice sneaking up, you must have some Injun in you.

If the choices reside with either Oz or Kansas, and since this is in black and white, I suggest your snowbird is headed to Kansas. A very enjoyable picture, Mr Wizard of Caedes.

I can relate to crawling through mounds of snow to get the shot I really want... This snowbird is really quite elegant, though as you said there will be flocks of snowbirds flapping in from Florida, etc....
