Last year was a difficult year for White Tailed deer in Missouri. Many were infected with a disease known as Blue Tongue. It depleted the deer population immensely and deer harvest was down during the annual hunting season. Hunters had to be sure the deer weren't infected before the meat was eaten. Local conservation authorities would check the deer if there was any doubt. My grandson found one that had drowned in a pond. The disease made the deer think it was dying of thirst. Scenes like this are being discovered and there is no way on knowing how this particular deer died. It makes for a sad scene, but nature isn't always easy on the eyes. Possible contest entry.

Nature can be cruel and this photo gives us a view of its work. Would be a reminder of how nature works. Good entry also.

If you hadn't explained what it had succumbed to, I (like most uninformed, city-dwelling type passerby) would've thought the animal had passed away decades ago, and what remained was now just a part of the scenery during the passing seasons...

Good presentation, Cap'n...Faved...

Owd Fella Tick (OFT), the Bluetongue virus, causing an acute disease with high morbidity and mortality by certain animals, was unknown to me, although, in according to the information by checking-out your link, I've read now that the Bluetongue virus has been observed in Australia, the US, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.

A good contribution for the photojournalism gallery. B&W is well chosen for this sad story as well.

If you decide that this will be your entry for the current contest, wish you Good Luck with it.

Gosh, it does give one pause to think about all aspects of nature. This is a lovely capture, simple but with meaning and perfectly taken. Wonderful for the contest.

There can be no better way to show a harsh winter. Wonderful (even sad tough) image showing the situation very well.
