The Joplin Union Depot is a historic railroad station located at Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. The station was served by a number of railroads, two of which were the Kansas City Southern Railway and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. The station was completed in July 1911. On November 4, 1969, the last train, the Southern Belle visited the station, ending 58 years of constant service.[2] After train service ended, the station slowly deteriorated. Designed by the Canadian-born architect Louis Curtiss, the station was featured in the January 1912 edition of Popular Mechanics for its use of mining waste in the concrete.

On March 14, 1973, the station was entered into the National Register of Historic Places. It is currently unoccupied. There are currently[when?] plans to restore the depot. There have been many ideas for its use, but none have been made certain. This would tie in with the revitalization of downtown. Information courtesy of Wikipedia.

I took this photo several years ago, but never posted it. Just a portion of the canopy leading to the depot remains. Joplin is still trying to sell it and there is currently a Facebook page devoted to saving the Depot.

If you are interested in its history, you can read this. In case that link doesn't work for you, here is another. I have a color version, but thought this fit the feel of the abandoned depot much better.

Unfortunate neglect in black and white. No grey area here. The details smack you right in the face. The graffiti, the deterioration, the waste of a community facility. This place was held in high esteem for decades only to be defeated by time and a pandering to a future moved on highways and sky ways.

I enjoyed the history of this..too many of old memorable buildings...(there and over here)..are just left to rot....a building that has stood as long as this deserves to be in the limelight again...

Owd Fella Tick (OFT), by checking-out the second link in your narrative, I got this message: "

A pity, because I'm always very interested to read the complete story.

And sure, it's an interesting one, accompanied by an excellent B&W capture.

Of course I've searched for more information, and have found Southern Belle. Because this train rode trough Missouri as well, think it's the Southern Belle described in your narrative.

Thanks for this very interesting post, 👍 !

Fabulous clarity which makes all the more upsetting how this is suffering from neglect. It deserves better :(

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

...I remember visiting Joplin back in the early 90s... Part of a return trip from Arkansas, up through western Mo. and into KC (for a Chiefs vs Steelers game that a friend originally from that locale had tix for), and then back east to Chicago... I was impressed by this station's architecture when I saw it... Sort of a "Frank Lloyd Wright meets Art-Deco" motif, which I thought was unusual of that particular time... Sad to see that it was long closed and falling into decay...I hope it gets restored one day...

Nice presentation...Faved...
