This bell was originally cast in Obsya, Japan in 1739. It was housed in the Buddhist Temple, Shojenzi, in Yakuosan.(Now a part of Tokyo) It was then purchased by William Withan through a New York importer in 1907. It was shipped via the Suez Canal to New York, and then by rail to Reading, PA. It has been kept on the top floor of the Reading Pagoda ever since.

I couldn't help notice all the names and graffiti that has been etched into it over the years. I find it terribly sad that people would deface such an historical item.

hope you all enjoyed this small bit of Reading, PA history!

I agree Dot, that IS sad. A terrible testament to our times & culture that people would think nothing of defacing this beautiful old church bell. I wonder if the etchings could somehow be filed off ? Thanks for your great photo of this beautiful old lady, she bears her battle scars with a dignity & grace that in itself is a joy to see.

A sad commentary on society today! No wonder everything has to be behind glass or out of reach anymore. We have to protect ourselves from ourselves! Very neat old bell & nice capture of it in spite of the graffiti however Dotti! Love hearing the history of things too! Wonderful Old Oval Toller! ;-) - ~ ~Dan

The history of this bell is amazing, and I too am somewhat ashamed of the way ppl act today, but remember that cavemen left behind some of their graffiti as well, so maybe it's just an age old problem. I love the color contrast in this between the ceiling and the patina of the bell itself. The capture tends to get washed out along the bottom, but the bell stays nice and clear...I'm glad I saw this :))PJ

You can tell the ones that weren't raised to respect history or others property. So sad to see this grand piece of history vandalized in this way. You have still given it dignity though in your photo Dot. Thanks for sharing .

Oh it infuriates me to see graffiti or any other type of property distruction. People have lost respect for history and fellow humans, amongst other things! But I did enjoy seeing and reading about the bell. Thank you so much!
