I was on a film shoot in a region of South Africa that was called Qua Qua (spelling is phonetic) it was designated as a homeland area by the government at the time. (1985) A local crew member told me that when the girls become young woman they are taken by the village female elders on a sort of camp-out for a few weeks and taught all the responsibilities of being a woman. Since it was a male member of the tribe he didnt elaborate and i was more interested in actually capturing a shot with her face exposed, as they are supposed to keep it covered the whole time they are in public.
