Lucanus cervus is the best-known species of stag beetle in the West (family Lucanidae), and is sometimes referred to simply as the stag beetle. It lives in holes in old trees and dead trunks, in the forest as well as in groves. Forest management, in eliminating old trees and dead wood, eliminates at the same time the habitat and food of this species. Once quite common, the population of the Lucanus cervus, along with that of other species of beetles which feed on wood, is in steep decline, and is now listed as a globally threatened/declining species.

Very good macro Christian.
Hope however that it won't visit my kitchen in order to prevent starving, lol.

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

Christian dear, yourself & Raj are both heroes of the day to me!
Both captured and presented most ferocious man eaters! LOL
The difference for me is that your model would be safe if encountered in my office [=kitchen! LOL], while flies have no chance!
Thanks for the nature's beauty that is in danger in the result of human activities.

Looking at your clear image Christian I'm reminded of a time as a kid when I saw flying Beetle in family backgarden, it really gave me the willies!

Super shot, & a very informative narrative too.

Very interesting Christian! Looks similar to an (ear wig). My sister used to have these dropping off the ceiling (old open beam) into the food. She woke up to that quickly and had to cover her food. That was a ranch style house made with stones from the San Bernadino Mtns. and logs. The fireplace was big enough to burn a large Christmas tree in.Lol! Thanks for sharing this bug!! Allen
